I built a free app that turns your iPhone into a 1965 transistor radio. Real dial. Real static. Real stations.
Hey folks !
I spent the last few months obsessing over something probably nobody asked for, I mean I really missed the old fashioned radios , where though it’s on your phone it should not feel like a app rather the radio the pocket radio we all miss
A radio app that feels like an actual radio.
Not a list of stations with a play button. Not a streaming service with algorithmic recommendations. A radio. With a dial you turn. Static between stations. A needle that drifts across the frequency display.
I call it RadioStar.
The whole screen is the radio. Leather grain cabinet. Brass tuning dial with 40 notches that click under your thumb with haptic feedback.
A red LED that breathes when idle and pulses when you tune. Warm amber ULTRA POWER display with a floating needle. Speaker grille with vintage mesh. Even a tube warmup delay because tubes need to heat up.
Turn it on. Spin the dial. Hear static. That familiar warm hiss. Lock onto a signal and it fades in. Jazz from Chicago. News from London. Oldies from a station you have never heard of. Old time radio dramas from the 1940s.
No playlists. No algorithms. Just you and whatever you discover.
Some other details I maybe spent too much time on:
- AM/FM band toggle with brass slider
- Five preset buttons for your favorites
- Static crossfade between stations
- Sleep timer for late night listening
- Chunky power switch that clicks on with purpose
Its free. The Classic Brown 1960s cabinet, all features, North America and Global stations. No ads. No tracking. No accounts. Your radio doesnt spy on you and neither do we.
Theres an optional $4.99 unlock if you want premium cabinets like Bakelite Black with art deco chrome, Seafoam Green atomic age teal, or Cherry Wood mahogany. That also unlocks Europe, Asia, Latin America, Oceania and Africa stations. But honestly the free version is the full experience.
I built this for people who remember when radio was an adventure. And for people who wish they did.

Would love to know what the community thinks of this , does this feel nostalgic ? And if theres a station you love that should be in there let me know., and what else you would want to see , I call this how radio should be :) may be todays Gen Z alpha would go oh this is how tuners worked :)
