[ Review ] KZ PRX The Power Hungry Planar

This is my 6th review after covering the GK Kunten, GK Streak, KZ Eldar, KZ Decet, and KZ AM16. As a beginner, these are just my early opinions as I explore different setups. This is my first pure planar magnetic IEM. It is short review coz I don't have good DAC to power prx so whenever if i ever buy a good DAC i will provide more detailed review.

Build Fit and Comfort

Packaging follows the same old KZ style which is minimal and a bit boring with the same bad cable and eartips.

I was surprised that it is quite light and small compared to the Decet or AM16.

It is almost the same weight and size and design as the GK Kunten. Almost like kunten Just swap face plates.

It fits well because it isn't bulky like other multi driver setups.

Power Requirements

I knew planars needed more power and testing with my 27mW 30ohm KZ AM02 DAC confirmed it.

I think it needs at least 60mW to really perform.

Sound Impressions

The sound is very neutral and flat.

The mids and highs are very balanced.

It lacks the bass punch of the Decet, feeling a bit thin, though the quality is there.

This might be due to my low power DAC.

Even at 100% bass and treble percent settings in Poweramp, it didn't distort like the Decet or AM16.

The EQ impact felt low, likely needing a better DAC to shine.

The separation and soundstage are high quality, matching the AM16 ( AM16 with eq )

Unlike the AM16, the PRX sounds good right out of the box without needing EQ.

Video Content Watching

I rank the PRX better for watching videos compared to the Decet and the AM16.

However, the GK Kunten still beats everyone else when it comes to video content.

The Performance Hierarchy

These three sets which include the AM16, PRX, and Decet are in a different league and effectively destroy the Kunten, Streak, and Eldar.

Here is how they rank against each other:

Separation

1 AM16 (with eq)

2 PRX

3 Decet

Soundstage

1 PRX

2 AM16 ( with eq )

3 Decet

Bass and Sub bass

1 Decet

2 AM16

3 PRX

Pros

Very lightweight and compact for a planar set

Excellent separation and soundstage

Musical and good to go right out of the box

Neutral and natural sound signature

Cons

Definitely needs a high power DAC

Bass feels thin with low power

Poor quality cable and eartips

Not for fans of heavy V shape tunning

Who should buy

If you like a neutral sound, a lightweight fit, and you aren't a bass head.

Who should skip

If you want heavy bass or if you can't invest in a DAC with at least 60mW of power.

Next review

I am taking a short break as I am busy this month, but I will be back in a week or two to review the ZA12. Also i want to try Zenith and Sonata and as24 pro but I am now broke af after buying all those . If anyone has contact with kz hoping to get review units.. 😂😂😂😂

Hello everyone! This is my 5th review. I am still quite new to this journey, but I love sharing my experiences with you all. After my last review of the KZ Decet, I decided to try the KZ AM16. This has an 8 Balanced Armature (BA) setup on each side, and it is the very first all-BA set I have ever tried! Up until now, I have only used Dynamic Driver (DD) setups.

Packaging and Design

Packaging: It comes in the same minimal, boring KZ packaging. I really wish they would pack their IEMs with cool anime waifu art like other Chi-Fi brands do! It also came with the old, bad KZ eartips. But honestly, I can look past all that if they sound good.

Look & Feel:

The build quality feels pretty solid. However, I am not a big fan of the faceplate design. The shell itself is much better compared to my other KZ sets. Since this is my first BA set, I just realized that BA drivers are cuboid-shaped, completely different from the round DDs I am used to seeing!

Weight: It is a bit lighter compared to the Decet (which is a bulky beast), but it is still on the heavier side compared to my super budget IEMs.

Initial Sound Impressions

It took me a few days to write this review because my first impressions were very mixed. When I first plugged the AM16 in, it didn't sound nearly as good as the Decet. It was definitely better than the Streak, but it lacked musicality.

It felt like I was listening to music in a completely empty hall. There was a tiny bit of sibilance (not too much, but noticeable). Everything was technically good, but it felt like I was listening to a $20 set. I felt like something big was missing, and honestly, I would have picked the Decet over this any day.

The Game Changer: Adding EQ I searched Reddit because I had heard before buying that this is one of KZ's good sets. I found out that this IEM really needs a little bit of EQ to shine. Since I am terrible at making EQ profiles myself, I just copied a pre-made 20-band EQ from a subreddit.

Wow. After applying the EQ, it sounds like an absolute wonder! So much detail, zero muddiness, and the sibilance is completely gone.

The Power Issue But, good things come at a price. My budget DAC dongle only provides 27mW of power. After applying a 20-filter EQ, it just wasn't providing enough power to drive the AM16 to high volumes. The volume wasn't terribly low, but I like to test all my IEMs at high volume, and it was only reaching about 80-90% of the volume I get with the Decet. This is a big deal to me, but it is a problem that can easily be solved by upgrading to a more powerful amp dongle.

Sound Profile

AM16 ( post eq ) vs KZ Decet

Bass: The bass is very different from the Decet. While the Decet has that hard-hitting, solid DD low-end, the AM16 has a wavy, rumbling kind of bass. It is a completely different texture, maybe coz of BA drivers I assume.

Mids & Highs: The highs and mids on the AM16 are way clearer than the Decet. I think this set really shines in the mid and lower-high frequencies, with zero sibilance after EQ.

Technicalities: After EQ, the soundstage opened up beautifully. The technicalities are actually much better compared to the Decet. Now I finally see why people recommend this set!

After using the Decet and the AM16, I went back to my GK Streak, and now the Streak's mids sound so muddy to me! To be fair, I haven't tried EQing the Streak yet, so comparing an EQ'd AM16 to a stock Streak might not be a fair fight. ( Also No eq I found for Streak on reddit if you have share it here.)

Pros:

  • Amazing detail and technicalities (once EQ is applied)
  • Very clear mids and highs with zero sibilance (post-EQ)
  • Wide, beautiful soundstage
  • Unique, rumbling BA bass texture

Cons:

  • REQUIRES EQ to sound its best (sounds hollow/empty out of the box)
  • Power hungry when heavily EQ'd (requires a good DAC/Amp dongle to reach high volumes)
  • Boring packaging and bad stock eartips
  • still bit heavy

Who should buy it: Anyone willing to use an EQ profile and if you want great technicalities and clear mids/highs, this is fantastic.

Who should skip it: If you want a plug-and-play IEM that sounds perfect out of the box without messing with EQ.

What is Next? My plan was to review the KZ PRX and KZ ZA12 next, but I am a bit busy this month, so I might have to push those reviews back for a week or two. Hope you liked the review!

Hey everyone,

I recently bought some IEMs like the gk kunten , gk streak, kz ZA12, kz Decet, kz AM16, kz PRX, and kz Alder . Has anyone else here tried these models? Would love to hear your thoughts on them.

Also, I am really curious if there are any other audiophiles based in Haldwani? It would be great to connect! I have a bunch of IEMs sitting around, so if any locals want to meet up, we can test and listen to each other's gear. Let me know if you'd be down for a listening session. ( Around dewalchuar area ) Please no kids

Also if any one have a good DAC i can try let me know I want to hear prx on a good DAC it needs power to produce good sound . if anyone wanna buy them you can dm me.

Introduction & Disclaimer

Hello again! This is my 4th review. So far, I have reviewed the GK Kunten, GK Streak, and KZ Eldar. Today I am reviewing the KZ Decet, which I like to call the "KZ Beast" because it is literally packed with 5 dynamic drivers on each side! It is hands down the biggest, thickest, and heaviest IEM I have ever tried.

Build, Fit, and Comfort

Right out of the box, I noticed it comes with foam eartips, which is unusual for KZ. I really didn't like them, so I quickly swapped them out for the reverse silicone eartips from my GK Kunten.

The Decet looks incredibly premium in the hand. It features a metal faceplate and a clear resin shell, allowing you to see all the DDs tightly packed inside. I was honestly worried about the comfort because it is such a bulky and heavy set. However, to my surprise, once I put the Kunten eartips on, they fit my ears perfectly. I had absolutely no issues with comfort, and they actually feel more comfortable to me than my GK Streak.

Sound Impressions
This is where the "Beast" nickname comes from. I have the Standard version, and the bass slaps so hard! It is incredibly rich and crispy. What amazed me the most is the bass separation. For the first time, I can clearly hear the separation between different bass instruments; everything is loud, clear, and distinct. But don't get the wrong idea: it is not a bloated bass-head set. The bass isn't overly heavy; it is just very high quality, rich, and crisp.

The mids are warm, and the treble is just as impressive. It is clean and rich with absolutely zero sibilance. It is smooth, non-harsh, and has no metallic timbre.

The soundstage is very wide. You can easily tell the difference between instruments playing near you versus far away. Vocals are very good, but the overall tuning feels a bit more instrument-forward rather than vocal-forward.

Overall, this is a V-shaped tuning with punchy bass and full of details. It is the best sounding IEM I have ever tried, easily beating the GK Kunten. I don't know why people say Kunten is the best under 50 USD because the Decet completely destroys it. The only things the Kunten does better are being lightweight and having more female-forward vocals.

(Quick note: Avoid the stock foam eartips! They sounded way worse compared to regular silicone rubber eartips.)

Video & Media Consumption
I watched an episode of the Diamond no Ace anime and a few YouTube videos. I had no problems at all; the audio output for video was very clean and neutral.

Summary

Pros:
- Crisp and rich sound
- Very wide soundstage
- Amazing bass quality and separation (without being muddy or overly heavy)
- Warm mids and smooth treble

Cons:
- Very big and bulky shell
- Might be uncomfortable for some people due to the size (though it fit me perfectly)

Who should buy it:
Everyone looking for an amazing, detailed V-shaped sound under 50 USD.

Who should skip it:
Anyone who hates big, bulky, or heavy IEMs.

What is next?
Next up, I am going to review the KZ ZA12, KZ AM16, and KZ PRX. Stay tuned!

  • Crisp and rich sound
  • Very wide soundstage
  • Amazing bass quality and separation (without being muddy or overly heavy)
  • Warm mids and smooth treble

Hello everyone! This is my 3rd review. I’m still a beginner in the hobby and want to experience as many budget IEMs as I can before taking the plunge into the expensive stuff. Previously, I’ve only owned the GK Streak and GK Kunten, so those will be my main points of comparison.

Disclaimer: This is NOT a sponsored review. I bought this with my own money (though I wouldn't mind if they started sending me review units!). Also, I did order KZ's liquid silicone eartips, but I’m doing this review with the stock eartips to keep the comparison fair with the Streak and Kunten. (Side note: I did try the liquid silicone tips for one song, and they drastically change the sound compared to the stock ones!)

The KZ Eldar was released just a few weeks ago and comes in at a very budget-friendly 10-12 usd

Looks & Build-

It’s made of plastic and looks decent—resembling the KZ Gale at first glance (though I haven't tried the Gale to confirm). To be honest, the Kunten and Streak look and feel much more premium in the hand.

Fit & Weight - Here is where the Eldar shines. This thing is light AF. It might actually be lighter than most TWS earbuds. When you wear them, you barely feel the weight. Because they are so tiny and light, this is the first time I've felt that KZ/GK stock eartips actually provide a decent, secure fit.

Design - They have an open-back (or at least semi-open back) design. Another huge surprise: they use a standard 2-pin connector, not the usual QDC connector!

Comfort - You can easily wear these for hours without fatigue. They are highly portable, almost feeling like a standard pair of old-school earphones.

Sound Impressions
Overall, the Eldar isn't quite as technical as the Kunten or the Streak, but the sound is still very impressive for the price.

Bass - I’ve always heard that open-back IEMs produce less bass, but the Eldar surprised me. The mid-bass is very decent and actually punchier than the Kunten. However, the sub-bass extension isn't as good as the Kunten or the Streak.

Mids & Vocals - Everything is quite balanced. Vocals are natural and easily on par with both the Kunten and the Streak. But i sometimes notice breaking voice when volume is full ( only in few songs)

Treble- It struggles a bit in the treble region when pushed, but what it does produce sounds very natural rather than harsh or piercing. No Sibilance at all unlike kunten.

Soundstage & Separation - Separation is good, though no match for the rich, crispy separation of the GK Streak. However, the soundstage is wider than the Streak, and on par with (or slightly better than) the Kunten. Where the Streak can sometimes feel a bit "boxy," the Eldar's open-back design makes the music feel very open and airy.

Video & Media Consumption

I tested these out while watching an episode of Classroom of the Elite. The audio output for video is fantastic. Dialogue was incredibly clear, crisp, and natural. The tuning feels very well-suited for video content and anime, giving a distinctly different (and great) vibe compared to just listening to music.

Summary

Pros:
- Insanely lightweight and comfortable (can wear for hours)
- Standard 2-pin connector (No QDC!)
- Open-back/airy soundstage (avoids the "boxy" feeling)
- Surprisingly punchy mid-bass for an open-back design
- Durable for travel due to the light plastic build
- Great for dialogue and watching videos

Cons:
- Plastic body doesn't look/feel as premium as its competitors
- Average sub-bass extension
- Treble can struggle on complex tracks
- Technicalities and separation are slightly behind the GK Streak

Who is this for?
If you are looking for an ultra-comfortable daily driver for commuting, traveling, or wearing for long hours without fatigue, this is a pretty great deal.

Who should skip it?
If you already own better, more technical IEMs, or if you don't specifically need a cheap, lightweight beater set for long sessions.

My Setup for this Review
- IEM: KZ Eldar
- DAC: KZ AM02
- Source/Player: Poweramp (Initial testing time: 3-4 hours)

What’s Next?
In the coming days, I’ll be reviewing the KZ Decet, KZ ZA12, KZ AM16, and KZ PRX.
Let me know in the comments which one you want me to review next! (Note: I might hold off on the planar PRX for a bit. My AM02 DAC might not have enough power to do them justice, so I'm looking into getting a more decent DAC to drive them properly first.) Gives a thumbs up if you want more reviews like that.
