Rant about Drizzt

OK, first of all, when I think of the Underdark; the tunnels, the passageways, the massive caverns that hold cities and such, I think 3 dimensionally. On a global scale, I think of the Underdark as a massive ball of swiss cheese, with tunnles and passages going in every which direction. Some slope up, some down. I really don't think that if you walk out one of the tunnels around the edges of Menzoberranzan that they are all flat like dungeon hallways. That being said, the main chamber of Menzo is 2 miles long. The drow of Menzo were known to have a patrol radius of 5 miles.

I was doing some research on creating a drow city and discovered that Menzo is 2 miles under the Surbrin Valley. Honestly didnt know this before. I thought it was MUCH deeper than that.

This is where my rant comes in. My brain suddenly combined all this information and led to one question: WHY, in Salvatores ball sack, did it take Drizzt, who has both Intelligence and Wisdom of 17, TWELVE FUCKING YEARS TO FIND HIS WAY TO THE SURFACE?. He'd already been there once! He made it Blingdenstone and by all accounts thats 45 miles away. Just doesn't make sense to me. Ok rant over.
