Magnesium salt supplementation - what are runners' experience with it supplementation for marathons?

I just completed another marathon on Sunday, and although I ran faster this year than the previous one and the cramping ensued about 4-5 km later this time round, I still battled with cramping over the final 5 km of the race.

Generally, I think hydration was good, and I actually carried water this time round and added general salt tablets to my hydration.

However, it's come to my attention that the cause of the cramping might be more neurological (due to muscle fatigue) rather than due to dehydration per se.

It's why I wonder whether taking magnesium capsules (such as magnesium glycinate) might help 'relax' muscles, particularly towards the end of the race when I suffer the most from cramping.

Perhaps other magnesium salts are more effective in your experience or not at all.

What is your anecdotal experience? And are there any scientific studies on the benefits of magnesium supplementation for the marathon?
