A question on language
The new AUSPath standards of care have made a note to use language like testosterone and oestradiol hormone therapies instead of masculinising and feminising hormones.
I've previously found masculinising and feminising useful descriptive words to use with patients and also found that my patients tend to use these words too. I can see however that non-binary or agender people might not necessarily identify with these words.
On the other hand I think masculinising and feminsing are more social descriptors consistent with gender as a social construct and testosterone and oestradiol based hormones feels very medicalising/pathologising to me.
I'd love to know what this community thinks.
