Is the "in English" the Adverbial/Adjunct in that sentence?

I would say "yes" to all those questions, but I'm a non-native and not quite sure about it.

In the above sentence, the pronoun "me" is Indirect Object, and the clause "what I was doing" is Direct Object.

What makes such grammatical functions appear in the quoted sentence?

Is it the syntax, or semantics, or both?
