Bowl planting advice please

Bowl planting advice please

Here's a hare-brained idea that I'm working out. I have a tree stump-looking piece of drift wood from a fish tank I downsized. I also have a Bulbophyllum orchid that would look ravishing on said stump. I am envisioning it in a bowl, similar to the picture. (Thank you Another World Terraria (AWT) for inspiration and YouTube how to's. Thanks to this sub for posting a link to AWT in the resources area.) I don't have a nice aquarium, or the like, to put it in which is why I'm brainstorming the bowl set up. The bowl I have in mind does NOT have drainage holes.

I watched a few of AWT's videos on Wabikusa and Kusamono plantings. For the Wabikusa (aquatic planting), he started by epoxying the wood to his bowl. For the Kusamono (forest floor planting), he essentially zip tied the wood through the drainage holes and some egg crate. As stated, my ceramic bowl has no holes in the bottom. It would be misted versus full on watering.

Here are my questions:

  1. Since my set up would mostly be gravel/soil, not aquatic in nature, should I consider a different bowl or a bonsai planter with drainage?

  2. If I stick with my bowl, would epoxying be the best idea or would some spray foam be adequate?

  3. If epoxy, is there a type that's better for terrarium builds?

You guys do amazing work here so I hope you can help. If you think there's a better sub for this type of setup, please let me know.

Herbicide opinions for under a stone flower bed barrier

We have a flowerbed that has been under siege from crabgrass for years. I just pulled our our rock barrier and dug/pulled as much as I could with more to go. I'm widening the bed a little so there will not be any intentional plantings where this edging will go. We're talking about putting in a metal barrier in ground with the rocks back in place over it. I would like to put an herbicide at that level, too. We'd bury it, since we have chickens, but have a fence that keeps the stinkers out of the bed. Other info that might be useful: high desert climate, super rocky soil (football sized rocks down to gravel), up to 100F in the summer, cold in winter down to -30F.

  1. Would you go granular or liquid?

  2. Broad spectrum or crabgrass specific?

  3. Brands you like?

Thanks in advance, Reddit!
