Best camera under $900 for intermediate user (coming from Nikon D60)

Hi! I’m looking to upgrade my camera and would really appreciate some advice.

I’m currently using a Nikon D60 (from 2008) with a Tamron 18–200mm lens. I actually like the results, but I need a lot of light to get good quality images, and it’s starting to feel limiting—especially in low light and overall performance.

I’d say I’m at an intermediate level. I shoot both photo and some video, and I want something I can grow into, not just a beginner camera.

So far I’ve been considering:

  • Sony a6700 (mainly because of video)
  • Canon EOS R50 (more budget-friendly)

But I’m not sure what’s actually worth it in 2026.

My budget is around $900 USD (maybe a bit flexible), so I know something like the a6700 might be out of reach unless I find a good used deal.

Also, I’ll be traveling to Orlando in a month, so I’m thinking about buying it there — not sure if that’s a good idea or where to look (Best Buy, used stores, etc.).

What would you recommend in this situation?

  • Should I prioritize body or lenses?
  • Is it better to go Sony for lens ecosystem long-term?
  • Any specific models I should look at (even used)?

Thanks!
