Brad cost the team a point today in the final chase by mispronounciation

The question was something like "What country...makes pottery....called Agano-ware?"

The answer was "Japan". Should have been obvious

But Brad pronounced it _Agg-no-wear_.

Totally different from the actual pronunciation _a-ga-no-wa-re_.

I'd be pretty mad if I was on that team.

Hi, I have some questions about endpapers. I've watched some DAS videos but haven't got answers to some specific things...

  1. Are endpapers always tipped on, or are they sometimes glued down to the entire first page of the text block?

  2. I have some beautiful origami paper i want to use but its very very lightweight. Could I glue it to another piece of paper to increase its weight? Would that work?

Or should I make the endpaper the normal way with heavier weight paper and then afterwards glue down the origami paper?

  1. I think this is right, but just double-checking....the mull is first glued down to the first and last page of the textblock and then the endpaper are tipped on on top of the mull, correct?

Or the alternative would be the endpapers tipped on and then mull is glued down afterwards, so it ends up between the board and the pastedown endpaper. Which is correct?

Thanks everyone!

Tl;dr - For a flatback case binding, what should the hinge gap be between the spine and the glued board? TIA!

I'm trying to make a flatback case bound book. Just the typical most common cloth binding you see with a flat spine.

I've never made one before and I think I've done the wrong size hinge gap.

I can't find any videos from DAS - and Darryn has every other binding I could possibly wish for!

Is there another name for this binding? Is that why I can't find it?

I know how to make rounded and backed case binding but never done a flat spine. I was at a book making workshop and tried to ask what the hinge gap should be. One instructor said it should be the width of your board. So I did this (with a roomy board width) and then the other instructor came over and started grimacing and showing her teeth at me! So I asked what was wrong and whether the gap should be bigger and she simply wouldn't tell me! It was bizzare!

I've sewn the textblock and glued the boards and a thin card spine to the book cloth. Now I just have to glue the mull, headbands, and case it in with endpapers.

But I don't think its going to work.

Can anyone advise me? What size gap between board and spine should I have?

Should I try to remove the spine, make it a bit narrower (its actually a bit too wide right now as the textblock was compressed when I got the edges guillotined), and then glue it back on?

Any reputable tutorials for this binding? DAS is normally my go-to.

There seems to be so little information about this binding compared to the round back.

I really don't know what I'm doing here. I was just going to work it out as I go, but now that I'm at the final stages I kinda do want it to work out!

Help please?
