Classic books on urban loneliness?

Hi everyone,

What are some of the classics that deal with urban loneliness? Feeling alone and lonely in the big city?

I am particularly interested in books that explore the feeling of loneliness; how does it feel and how does the city impact the feeling.

I've read the Bell Jar. Plath have a lot of very profound descriptions of loneliness. I've also read a lot of the russian classics. Dostojevskij, for instance, seems to explore a type of existential loneliness with the Idiot.

Anything else you could recommend?

Best way to get started?

Hi everyone,

I am not excactly sure where it comes from but in recent years I have grown more and more found of watching birds. At this point, I have next to no expertise and knowledge. I just like watching our neighboorhood birds and the birds at our small summer cottage by the sea.

I've heard that bird watching can provide a feeling of closure and immersion with nature; something that I - a resident of Copenhagen - have never really felt. Perhaps, that is what attracts me and perhaps that is also why some many other people enjoy watching birds?

In this sense, bird watching can almost be a political act in a time of climate crisis; a way of reconnecting with nature.

Anyways, what I wanted to ask: How should I get started? What books do you recommend? And are there any spots in Copenhagen (or nothern europe) that you would recommend?

I appreciate any advice :)

Best city for first marathon?

Hi everyone,

I recently just got back for a ruptured achilles tendon. Before that I was running half marathons. The goal now is to run a marathon. Im not in any rush, however. I am pacing myself slowly training wise.

I am from Copenhagen, and I've heard that there is something special about this marathon - and also running in your own city is a special feeling. Having said that, I wonder what marathon (city) you would recommend for a first marathon? You dont have to factor in logistics. I just want to know what marathon (city) is well-organised, safe and not too hectic - as well as having a tremendous atmosphere?

Marathon: how to train and what to eat?

I recently just started running. I am up to about 5 k in 25 minutes time.

The goal is a marathon but I am little unsure how I should pace myself in regards to training? I heard that moving to fast (numbers of run pr. week, lenght and speed) are not necessarily the best way forward.

Also, I wonder what I should eat? Is it true that pasta is the best way forward? :)

How would you proceed?

I am a big fan of classic Russian novelist (e.g. Dostojevskij, Tolstoj, Gogol, Lemonov). Currently re-reading the Idiot. I am struck by how my experience of, for instance, Dostojevskij changes as I get older. Having read it in my twenties, I was very much occupied by its existentialism. Now, however, I found it to be much more humourous.

What is your favorite? And how have you reading of it changed through time?
