HHKB Type-S inconsistency? One sounds amazing, the other hollow
Since i m visiting Japan i thought to finally get an hhkb. I bought two HHKBs from different stores.
The first one is a white Hybrid Type-S (US layout) and it sounds really good — nice, deep, “thocky/talky” sound. The only issue is a slight ping on the spacebar, which I’m planning to fix with some lube.
Then I bought a second one, a black Hybrid Type-S (JP layout) from another store because I wanted to try the Japanese layout.
The problem is that this one sounds completely different — much more hollow, less “thock”, and overall just worse compared to the white one. It’s actually disappointing considering it’s supposed to be the same model.
What’s interesting is that in the store I tried multiple HHKBs and I noticed they didn’t all sound the same, so I’m wondering:
Is this level of sound inconsistency normal with HHKBs?
Did I just get a “bad” unit?
Will it improve with use over time?
Or is this something I need to fix with mods (foam, lube, etc.)?
I don’t think I can return it, so I’m trying to figure out if it’s salvageable or if this is just how it is.
Would appreciate input from people with multiple HHKBs.
