Cheap universal roof rack actually works (for anyone on the fence)
Wanted to make this post because I was in this exact situation and couldn’t find solid info on what roof racks actually work for this car. Every time I found one, the reviews would make me second guess it.
So I said screw it and bought one of those cheap ~$78 universal roof racks off Amazon. You know the ones… all look the same, mixed reviews, some people saying they’re trash and flew off, others saying they’re great.
After actually using it, I can say they work way better than people give them credit for. Yeah, they’re not top-tier quality, but they absolutely get the job done. The people saying theirs flew off… that’s almost definitely user error. If you install it wrong, yeah, it’s gonna be a problem. But it extremely sturdy and gets the job done extremely well.
I will admit, setup is a little confusing at first, but there’s a good YouTube video that walks you through it and makes it pretty straightforward.
For reference, I ran two surfboards on it (one was 8 ft, so a lot of wind resistance). I drove 14 hours, hitting speeds up to ~90 mph at times, and the rack didn’t vibrate, didn’t loosen, didn’t shift at all.
As for noise, yeah you’ll hear wind, but it’s not from anything being loose or shaking. It’s just air hitting the rack. You can still have a normal conversation and listen to music without blasting it.
So yeah these universal racks work like a beauty.
