Minus the initial start up cost has anyone noticed any noticed saving in growing your own food this way. Plus I want to try and breed my own tilapia for meat.
Im just curious if there's actually a future savings i know there's cost to feed the fish.

I didn't realize just how expensive the clay pellets are and I need a little over 600 Liters worth. So if anyone has any experience with these please let me know. This is what im looking at. I know lava rock isn't as friendly and I have to wash it extra good and check for Ph.
Im just setting up my aquaponics system but my ambitions are getting higher. Im want to try and breed my own fish for food as well. I was thinking instead of making it 2 separate systems try adding on more tanks for fish and putting it all inline with my grow beds and this way I can also add more grow beds.
I'll make a lid soon. I might even use the reflective insulation on the top too. Im not sure if the insulation is a little overkill but I live in south east and i just don't want the water out there cooking in the sun. It does have a shade tree by the tank too. But I also hope it helps in the winter with the light freeze I get in the winters here. It doesnt hit freezing here much though.
Using a whopping 20g gallon filter from my indoor aquarium. I do got a 800gph wave pump in there to help keep the water moving.
As mentioned it's my first time setting up a aquaponic system. I want to add a solids filter tank and a bio filter. The picture is from a Rob Bob's video this is pretty close to what im imagining. So far my checklist is
1x 265 gal Ibc tote. Choping top for grow bed
2x 30 gal barrels for solids and bio filter
2x extra 55 gal barrels probably use one for sump
1x 1000 gph pump
1x 25L 400gph air pump
For now im only running one grow bed. But im trying to plan ahead for adding more which it whybi want the solid filter and bio filter.
Now one thing im torn on is should I just cut the ibc tote higher and use the whole thing for fish and just go on and chop the barrels for the grow beds? This way i already have a larger volume tank and just continue adding barrels.
As for fish types want to try using bluegill
