Weekend on call hospice nurses
I’ve been working weekends on call from 5pm-8am for the last 4 months. Our census has steadily increased from 92 to now 134 over those months. During the day on the weekends we have a triage nurse, an admission nurse, and a runner for PRN and scheduled visits. Any visits that don’t get done get forwarded onto me, it’s not unusual for me to be notified of multiple pending visits before my shift starts.
I am going to 5-9 visits every shift, does that seem to be the norm? This position is “on call” but I am not able to sleep during my shifts because I’m busy the entire time and find myself at visits and charting well after 8 am. On a slow night I see maybe 3-4 patients, but lately, it’s been averaging about 7 a shift. Thoughts? Advice? Thank you!
