My honest, and probably unoriginal take on what makes Dark Souls I truly magical.

I have NG+ each of the titles in this franchise. After some caref consideration, and a recent replay of DSIII I’ve realized that this series does not work without the Metroidvania level design. The combat improvement is not enough to keep the player engaged outside of invasions, and pvp.

as much as I can appreciate the attempt to provide the player with the same challenge DSI offers it is simply not enough for me to attempt further playthroughs. There are not enough additional story elements, quest lines or interesting level design to compel further playthroughs. They try but mostly fail by dropping the key’s(I put this fully on the devs) to what made DSI truly magical. Its level design.

I have played DS1 10+ times

DSII, 3 times.

DSIII, 4 times.
