If right now almost everyone were to pick blue (95%) then by picking red you have changed nothing. This is a little too cynical clearly, but you have been amoral but not immoral.
If right now a majority of people however slim were to pick blue (51%) again technically you changed nothing. It was a little closer to changing everything but it didn’t. Amoral
If a majority of people were going to pick red (40% blue) then again you have changed nothing and congrats you have saved your own life. Amoral, and your cynicism validated
If as some red logicians claim everyone except the suicidal and a rounding error pick red (<1%) then doing anything but red is blatant suicide. Amoral.
Now given the week to campaign you see the field clearly no matter what the ultimate result of the vote is: if you push red you are morally absolved and alive.
Well that’s great! So you go and tell everyone you know about your discovery!
Let’s look at the cases again if you convince 1% as a result of your campaigning.
In most cases nothing has changed- however in the case where there was a thin blue victory your campaigning has directly caused the maximally worse outcome. 49% death avoidable if you kept your damn mouth shut.
So I posit it is not red pushers who are to blame, for whom the hands are most bloodied. It is anyone who has ever made a case for red in a public or private forum no matter how flimsy. It is YOU!! RED POSTERS who are the only villain in all this. I wondered why the snark and the I told you so’s irked me so bad. And it’s because you are campaigning for a worse outcome in all cases. Because being right in silence wasn’t good enough for you.
For if someday Mr. Beast gets the money together to make this happen YOU have been campaigning for genocide. For extinction, willingly and enthusiastically. Among the greatest monsters in history.
You’re allowed to vote red, you’re probably right, and you may survive a mass extinction for it. However- morally- you should stay out of the way of the rest of us doing the right thing.
