Using a Job Offer to Negotiate a Raise?
Apologies in advance for the long post! Need advice from you good people.
I am currently employed with a decent salary, but my career growth has stagnated. The industry is not doing well, and there are limited opportunities for progression. I have been with the company for the past 12 years and have only been promoted twice.
There are times when I consider leaving for better prospects, but I am very comfortable in my current role due to the flexibility and benefits — fixed working hours (9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday), no overtime, no restrictions on taking leave, and an average bonus of two months.
As one of the more senior members remaining, my boss relies heavily on me to handle most of the responsibilities, especially since many of my teammates have already left.
Recently, I received a job offer with a guaranteed salary increase of about 10–15% (still under negotiation). However, the new role will come with increased workload, longer hours, and greater responsibilities ie. demanding customers.
Should I wait for the final offer and use it to negotiate with my current employer? Or would that risk backfiring?
TL;DR: My current job is stable but offers limited growth, while a new opportunity provides higher pay and better prospects but comes with more stress. Should I leverage the offer to negotiate with my current employer?
