Essential 'Driving Rules' in Korea

Essential 'Driving Rules' in Korea

1. U-turns: Only at Signs

You can only U-turn where you see the blue U-turn sign.

* You must wait until your car reaches the white dashed line. U-turning on a solid white/yellow line is a major violation.

* Follow the text under the sign. Common ones: "On Left Turn" (좌회전 시), "On Red Light" (보행신호 시), or "When U-turn Signal is on."

2. Right Turn on Red: Stop First

If the main light is RED, you must come to a COMPLETE STOP before the crosswalk.

* If a pedestrian is crossing, or even waiting to cross, you must stay stopped until they reach the sidewalk.

* If there is a specific arrow signal for right turns, you must wait for it.

3. School Zones (Yellow Zones)

Strictly 30km/h (some are 20km/h).

* All fines and penalty points are doubled in these zones.

* Cameras trigger even at 1km/h over the limit. Accidents involving children here carry severe criminal penalties (Minsigi Law).

4. Blue Bus Lanes (Bus Only)

* Blue Solid Line: 24-hour bus only lane. Stay out.

* Blue Dashed Line: Restricted hours (usually 07:00–21:00). Outside these hours, cars can enter.

* Automated cameras are everywhere; fines are issued instantly.

5. Highway Lane 1: Passing Only

The leftmost lane (Lane 1) on highways is for passing only.

* Cruising in Lane 1 without passing is a fineable offense. Move to Lane 2 once you've finished overtaking.

6. Zero Tolerance for DUI

0.03% BAC (Blood Alcohol Content). Essentially, one drink puts you over the legal limit.

* Use "Daeri-unjeon" (Designated Driver) services via Kakao T or T-map apps. It is cheap and safer than a criminal record.

7. Dashcams are Everywhere

Almost 99% of cars in Korea have "Blackboxes" (Dashcams).

* Citizens can report your traffic violations via the "Safety Report" (안전신문고) app using their dashcam footage. You will receive the fine in the mail.

How to get discounted groceries and food (20~30%) in Korea 👉 “마감할인 공략”
▲ 18 r/seoul+1 crossposts

How to get discounted groceries and food (20~30%) in Korea 👉 “마감할인 공략”

1. Visit major Supermarkets (E-mart, Lotte Mart, Homeplus) after 8 PM.

- Look for the "Fresh Food" or "Deli" sections.

- Yellow/Red "Clearance" stickers start appearing on prepared foods (Sushi, Chicken, Salads).

- Just before closing(usually 30~60mins before), discounts often jump from 20% to 50% or even buy 1 get 1 free.

2. Convenience Store Apps (CU / GS)

- Use "마감할인" (Expiry Sale) tab in these apps.

- You can reserve Lunch Boxes (Dosirak), Sandwiches, or Gimbap that are close to their expiry date at 40-50% off.

- Pay in the app and just go to the store to pick it up.

3. Last Order (라스트오더) App

- This is a dedicated app for food waste reduction.

- Bakeries like Paris Baguette or local cafes sell their remaining bread/cakes for half price starting around 7 PM.

- Local restaurants list lunch boxes or side dishes for pickup at massive discounts.

4. Baemin(배민) 마감할인 Section

- Open the Baemin app -> Go to B-Mart.

- Look for the "마감할인" (Last Order) icon.

- Get meat, milk, and vegetables that have 1-2 days left on the shelf for 30-70% off.

5. Seoul-specific Hack: "Ddaeng-yo" (땡겨요)

- This app offers much higher pickup discounts than Baemin or Coupang Eats in 2026.

- Check for "First Order" or "Daily Pickup" coupons that can take 5,000 to 10,000 KRW off your meal.

How to rent a car in Korea as a Non-Local

How to rent a car in Korea as a Non-Local

Renting a car in Korea as a foreigner can be tricky because rules change depending on your visa status.

1. Resident (ARC) vs. Tourist (No ARC)

If you have an ARC (D-2, D-4, E-7, F-series, etc.)

Legally, you can use an International Driving Permit (IDP) for 1 year from your entry date. However, most major rental companies (Lotte, SK) and apps (Socar) will REJECT you if you only have an IDP once you are a registered resident.

You MUST therefore exchange your home country license for a Korean Driver’s License at a testing center.

If you are a Tourist (Short-term stay)

You can rent easily using your Passport + valid IDP (Geneva or Vienna Convention) + Home country license.

2. "1-Year Rule" for Apps (Socar)

Most rental companies and apps require your license to be at least 1 year old.

If you exchanged your foreign license for a Korean one, Lotte and SK Rent-a-Car will exempt the 1-year requirement for vehicles up to 9 seats.

You must show proof of your original license's history (Apostille or Embassy verification).

3. Car-Sharing Apps (Socar)

Requirements:

  1. Korean Driver’s License

  2. Korean phone number (registered in your name).

* Socar now supports "Mobile License Verification," but as a foreigner, the 1-year experience rule is still very strict on apps.

* For new Korean license holders, traditional companies (Lotte/SK) are much easier.

4. Safety & Legal Facts

Car Seats:

Mandatory for children 6 years old and under.

You will be fined if caught without one.

Physical IDP:

You MUST have the physical booklet.

A photo or a digital scan on your phone is 100% invalid.

Full Cover Insurance:

Always choose "Super CDW" (0 Won Deductible).

Without it, you’ll pay for "Loss of Use" fees (휴차료), which can cost 500,000 KRW+ for even a small scratch.

Use Naver Map or KakaoMap for navigation.

Google Maps is still limited for driving directions in Korea.

100 members! Thank you & Our vision for this community

Hey everyone, this is your moderator.

I just noticed we crossed the 100-member mark today (currently at 107!). Honestly, I’m a bit overwhelmed. I didn’t expect so many of you to join this fast.

I want to take a second to share why I started this sub and where I hope we can go together.

For now, we're all about sharing "hacks" to survive and thrive in Korea. But my ultimate goal for r/KoreaLifeHacks is much bigger than just a wall of information.

As we grow, I want to turn this into a bridge of relationship. I’m planning to organize offline meetups where local Koreans and those of you visiting or living here can actually meet, hang out, and help each other out.

I want this to be a healthy, supportive community-not just a place to read tips, but a place to find actual friends and a reliable network in a country that can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming.

Whether you're a student struggling with your ARC, a traveler looking for the "real" Seoul, or a local who wants to share your culture, I want you to feel at home here.

Thank you once again for being part of the first 100.

k.ride = taxi hailing service launched by Kakao Mobility.

I think for those having trouble using the standard Kakao T app due to the identity verification process, this would be a great alternative.

I tried signing in the app, and actually tried it.

Below was the steps :

Registration: You can sign up using a foreign phone number. A Korean SIM card or Alien Registration Card (ARC) is not required for account verification.

Payment: It accepts international credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, etc.). You can link your card directly in the app for automatic payments.

In-app Translation: The chat feature with the driver supports real-time translation for 133 languages, allowing you to communicate without knowing Korean.

Upfront Pricing: The app provides an estimated fare before you request a ride, so you know the cost in advance.

Login: Supports easy login through Google, Apple, or phone number.

Apple App Store & Google Play Store ==> both available

100,000 KRW fine —if smoke under "No Smoking" signs in Korea

100,000 KRW fine —if smoke under "No Smoking" signs in Korea

Think that "No Smoking" sign is just a suggestion? In Korea, it’s a direct ticket to a 100,000 KRW fine. As of March 2026, the enforcement has become much stricter, and the "excuses" that used to work are now gone.

1. "No More Loophole" Rule

This is the biggest change this year.

• Vaping is Tobacco: Starting April 24, 2026, synthetic nicotine (liquid vapes) is officially classified as tobacco.

• The Fine: If you are caught vaping in a no-smoking zone, you face the same 100,000 KRW fine as a regular cigarette. The old excuse of "It's just juice/steam" will no longer save your wallet.

2. "Double Whammy" (150,000 KRW in 5 mins)

If you are caught smoking AND you throw the butt on the ground:

• Smoking Fine: 100,000 KRW

• Littering Fine: 50,000 KRW (Standard for cigarette butts)

• Total: 150,000 KRW. That is roughly the price of 33 packs of cigarettes or 15 meals at a student cafeteria gone in seconds.

3. "30-Meter" School Rule

In 2026, the no-smoking radius around schools, kindergartens, and daycares has been expanded to 30 meters.

• Even if you are just "passing by" on the sidewalk, if you are within that 30m zone, you are liable for the fine. CCTV cameras in these areas are specifically programmed to detect smoking behavior.

4. Why you WILL get caught

It’s not just about the police.

• CCTV Everywhere: Major subway exits (10m radius) and bus stops are monitored by high-def cameras.

• The "Paparazzi" Effect: Locals and students frequently use the Safety e-Report (안전신문고) app to report smokers in non-smoking zones. One quick photo from a passerby, and a fine notice could be mailed to your registered ARC address.

5. Where to look for the "Safe" spots

• Look for the designated smoking booths (usually grey or glass boxes) near major stations or behind large office buildings.

• Use apps like "PuffZone" or "Kakao Maps" (search '흡연실') to find legal spots. It’s worth the 2-minute walk to save 100k won.

Stop dragging your bags. Use "Same-Day Luggage Delivery“

Stop dragging your bags. Use "Same-Day Luggage Delivery“

One of the biggest mistakes tourists make in Seoul is landing early in the morning and dragging 20kg+ suitcases through the crowded subway just to drop them off at their hotel. In 2026, there is a much "smarter" way to start your trip.

"Hands-Free" :

Airport ↔ Hotel Delivery

Services like "Goodlugg" or "Zimfree" will pick up your bags at Incheon/Gimpo Airport and deliver them directly to your hotel (or vice versa) while you go out and explore.

1. Drop-off at ICN

After clearing customs, head to the service desk (usually near Exit 1 or 13 in T1).

2. Price

It’s roughly $20–$25 (approx. 28,000 KRW) per bag.

• 2026 Tip: If you book through apps like Klook, Trazy, or Creatrip 24 hours in advance, you can usually get a 15% discount.

3. Explore Immediately

You can head straight from the airport to a cafe in Seongsu-dong or a palace without ever touching your suitcase.

4. Arrival at Hotel

Your bags will be waiting at your hotel’s front desk or concierge by 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM the same day.

Why?

- As of 2026, the Airport Railroad (AREX) and Line 2 are busier than ever. Fumbling with large bags in the crowd is stressful for you and the locals.

- Real-Time Tracking: These services now provide a tracking link via WhatsApp or KakaoTalk, showing you a photo of your bag when it’s picked up and when it safely arrives at your destination.

- Airbnb/Guesthouse Support: Even if your accommodation doesn't have a 24-hour front desk, many services now use CU/GS25 convenience store lockers as drop-off points.

If you are departing, you can also drop your bags at the hotel desk by 11:00 AM, and they will be waiting for you at the airport in the evening.

How to get your 3.3% "Alba" tax back.

How to get your 3.3% "Alba" tax back.

If you did any part-time work (Alba) in 2025 or early 2026 and saw 3.3% deducted from your paycheck, that money isn't gone forever. It’s a pre-payment, and for most students, you can get 100% of it back in cash.

May 1 – May 31, 2026

This is the Comprehensive Income Tax (Jonghap Sodeuk-se) filing period. Even if you only worked for one month, you are eligible to file for a refund.

Why?

• Free Money: If your total annual income was below approx. 15 million KRW, the government usually refunds the entire 3.3% you paid. For a student earning 1 million KRW/month, that’s about 400,000 KRW back in your pocket!

• It’s Legal: This is a standard procedure for all residents (including foreigners) in Korea.

How?

  1. The "Hometax" App (SonTax):

• Download the SonTax (손택스) app.

• The 2026 Hack: The app now has a simplified "One-Click Refund" service for freelancers and part-timers.

• Login: Use "Simple Authentication" (간편인증) via KakaoTalk or PASS. Remember: Your name must be in ALL CAPS to match your phone records!

  1. Avoid High Commission Apps:

• You might see ads for apps like "Samsam" (3.3) that offer to do it for you.

• Warning: These apps often charge 10–20% commission. In 2026, the official NTS Hometax site is easy enough to use for free. Don't give away your hard-earned money!

  1. The English Help Desk:

• If you get stuck, call the National Tax Service (NTS) Foreigner Hotline: 1588-0560. They provide full English support for tax filing.

What you need?

• Your ARC Number.

• Your Bank Account Number (where you want the refund deposited).

• Your Phone (for identity verification).

Mark your calendar for May 1st. Log into Hometax, check your "3.3% withheld" amount, and click "File." Your refund will arrive in your bank account by late June or July.

How to lower your price for the movie tickets in Korea.

How to lower your price for the movie tickets in Korea.

If you’re paying 15,000 KRW for a movie in Korea, you’re doing it wrong.

1. "Ultimate Hack" (50% off)

Every Wednesday is Culture Day (New for April 2026)

This is the biggest news of the year. Starting April 1, 2026, the government has expanded "Culture Day" from once a month to EVERY WEDNESDAY.

• The Benefit: 2D movie tickets are only 7,000 KRW (standard price 15,000 KRW) between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM.

• Where: CGV, Megabox, and Lotte Cinema nationwide.

• How: No special coupon needed. Just book for a Wednesday evening show.

2. "KakaoTalk Gift" Hack (10-20% off)

As the OP mentioned, buying "Gifticons" (gift certificates) for yourself on KakaoTalk is a classic move.

• The Hack: Search for "CGV" or "Megabox" in the KakaoTalk Gift tab. They often have sets (2 Tickets + Popcorn) for 15-20% cheaper than the theater price.

• Note: You can select "Gift to Myself" (나에게 선물하기) to use the barcode immediately.

*** "ARC Wall" ==>Why KakaoTalk is hard for foreigners?

The reason many struggle with KakaoTalk isn't the app itself—it's the Identity Verification (Self-Authentication).

• The Rule: To use KakaoPay or Gift (for self-buying), your Kakao account MUST match your mobile phone carrier's data exactly.

• The "Name Torture": 99% of failures are because of the name format. You must enter your name exactly as it appears on your ARC (Alien Registration Card).

• Correct: TILL MARX (All Caps, Surname first)

• Incorrect: Till Marx

• The SIM Factor: If you are on a passport-only prepaid SIM, you generally cannot use the gifting/payment features. You need a SIM registered with your ARC.

3. Government Vouchers (6,000 KRW Off)

In 2026, the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) frequently releases 6,000 KRW discount vouchers on theater apps to boost attendance for films like The King's Warden. These are first-come, first-served, so check the "Event" tab on the CGV/Megabox app every Monday morning!

Why everyone is talking about "The King's Warden"

Why everyone is talking about "The King's Warden"

"The King's Warden" (왕과 사는 남자)

As of late March 2026, it has officially surpassed 15 million viewers, making it one of the most-watched films in Korean history.

What is it about?

Set in 1457, it tells the heartbreaking story of the young, deposed King Danjong (played by Park Ji-hoon) in exile. Yu Hae-jin plays the village chief who risks his life to protect the young king. It’s a perfect mix of historical tragedy and human warmth.

Why people are obsessed with it?

• Park Ji-hoon’s Global Fanbase: The lead actor (former Wanna One member) has brought in a massive international audience, turning a historical drama into a global trend.

• The "English Subtitle" Hack: Unlike many domestic releases, major theater chains like Megabox COEX and CGV Yongsan are currently running special screenings with Digital English Subtitles due to the high demand from the international community.

• Historical Context: If you’re studying for TOPIK or a Korean History class, this film covers the "Sejo's Usurpation" era (세조찬위) in a way that’s much easier to understand than a textbook.

• The "Yu Hae-jin" Effect: His signature "humanistic" acting style makes the complex history feel relatable and deeply emotional, even if you don't know all the historical details.

***

  1. Check "English Sub" Schedules: Look for the [ENG] tag on the Megabox or Lotte Cinema apps.

  2. Location Tip: Megabox COEX is the primary hub for international-friendly screenings.

How to find a Part-time Job (Alba) in Korea

How to find a Part-time Job (Alba) in Korea

Finding a part-time job as an international student in 2026 requires more than just walking into a cafe. You need the right apps and, more importantly, the legal permit.

1. Mandatory Apps

Don't just use Google.

These are the three platforms where 90% of Korean jobs are posted:

-Albamon (알바몬) & Alba Heaven (알바천국): The two giants. Both now have a "Foreigner Friendly" (외국인 지원) filter. Use this to find employers who are experienced with visa paperwork.

- Karrot (당근 - Danggeun): Best for local, neighborhood jobs like convenience stores or moving help. You can chat directly with the owner, and it’s often less formal than the big sites.

- K-Alba (Global Version): A specialized app for D-2/D-4 holders that filters jobs specifically by your TOPIK level and remaining visa duration.

2. Legal Requirements

Working without a permit (Siganje Chwi-eop-hwag-in-seo) will lead to deportation or a massive fine.

- Minimum Wage (2026): 10,310 KRW per hour. (Ensure your contract matches this).

- Permit Process:

  1. Find a job.

  2. Get the "Part-time Work Confirmation Form" signed by the employer and your school's international office.

  3. Report it to Immigration via the HiKorea website or visit the office.

• TOPIK is Key:

• TOPIK 3+: Can work in service jobs (cafes, restaurants).

• Below TOPIK 3: Strictly limited to manual labor or simple tasks.

3. Most Popular Jobs for Students

- Convenience Stores (CVS): Stable, but requires high Korean proficiency to handle "Toss" or "Apple Pay" issues and age verification for alcohol/tobacco.

-Kitchen Assistant: Best for those with lower Korean levels. High demand in university areas.

-English/Native Language Tutor: High pay (25,000+ KRW/hr) but legally gray—technically, private tutoring requires a specific visa status change. Stick to registered academies (Hagwons).

4. Resume (Iryeok-seo) Checklist

- Photo: A professional-looking headshot is mandatory in Korea.

- Visa Status: Clearly state you are D-2 or D-4.

- TOPIK Level: Place this at the very top.

- Experience: Mention if you have used Korean POS (Point of Sale) systems before.

***Download Albamon -> Filter for "Foreigner Friendly" -> Get your school's signature -> Register on HiKorea.

South Korea’s 2026 Immigration Overhaul (The "2030 Strategy")

South Korea’s 2026 Immigration Overhaul (The "2030 Strategy")

The Ministry of Justice officially launched the "2030 Immigration Policy Future Strategy" on March 3, 2026. This is not just a proposal; it is the new framework for all foreigners living in Korea.

1. "3-Tier" Visa Simplification

The complicated E-series visa system (currently 10 types/39 categories) is being reorganized into three levels based on skill:

• High-Skilled: Global tech talent and professionals.

• Middle-Skilled: Certified technicians and mid-level workers.

• Low-Skilled: Manual and seasonal labor.

2. Launch of the E-7-M "K-CORE" Visa

A new visa category specifically for foreign graduates of Korean junior colleges in manufacturing fields.

• The Benefit: Eases the shift from student (D-2) to professional (E-7) status.

• Incentives: Exemption from proving financial capacity (KRW 20M) and a faster track to F-2 residency if you work in regional areas for 3+ years.

3. "Top-Tier Visa" Expansion

Previously limited to corporate talent in 8 high-tech industries, the Top-Tier visa is now open to professors and researchers in all science and technology fields. The goal is to increase the number of holders to 350 by 2030.

4. Regional Immigration Package

To combat rural population decline, the government is offering dedicated support for foreigners settling outside of Seoul/Gyeonggi:

• Increased visa quotas for specific regions.

• Integrated support for childcare, education, and startup funding.

5. AI Biometric "Passport-Free" Entry

Starting this year, low-risk long-term residents can use automated immigration gates using only facial recognition, without needing to present a physical passport at the gate (based on pre-registered biometric data).

***Immigration is moving toward a skill-based system. If you are a STEM researcher or a technical student, your path to residency just got much easier.

How to dispose of large furniture (beds, desks) without buying stickers

How to dispose of large furniture (beds, desks) without buying stickers

Throwing away a mattress or a desk in Korea used to mean finding a convenience store that sells the right "Waste Sticker" or visiting a community center. As of March 2026, you can do it all in 1 minute via your phone.

Use App :

"Ppaegi" (빼기) / "Yeogiro" (여기로)

Most districts in Seoul (including Gangbuk-gu, which officially fully integrated this system today, March 27) now use these apps to handle large waste.

1. Take a Photo:

Open the app and take a photo of the item you want to discard.

The app’s AI will automatically identify the item (e.g., "Single Bed") and give you the exact price (e.g., 8,000 KRW).

3. Pay via App:

Use a credit card or KakaoPay/Toss to pay the fee. No physical sticker is needed.

4. Disposal:

You will get a Disposal Number (예약번호). Just write this number clearly on a piece of paper and tape it to the item.

5. Place outside:

Leave the item at the designated waste spot of your building. The truck will pick it up based on the GPS location you provided in the app.

***"Pick-up Inside" (내려드림)

If you live alone and can't carry a heavy sofa to the street, the "Ppaegi" app now offers a "Inside Pick-up" service (for an extra fee). Professional movers will come into your house and carry it out for you.
