What historical figures or celebrities are you surprised were anti bastards or weren’t bastards?

What historical figures or celebrities are you surprised were anti bastards or weren’t bastards?

We talk a lot about what great heroes turn out to be pieces of shit, but what figures were you surprised weren’t bastards and potentially heroes?

Joshua Norton was a business man who moved to San Francisco and bankrupted himself trying to price gouge the rice market and became homeless. After years on the street, he declared himself emperor of America and started getting involved in politics, attending meetings and publishing decrees in newspapers. I never had a low opinion of Joshua Norton but most videos on him do a disservice by leaving out what a genuine hero he was for the community. His newspaper articles were full of civil rights advocacy, the Norton trust discovered he was signing women’s suffrage petitions, he stopped a hate mob before it could form. He was more than some crazy guy pretending to be emperor, he was an activist who used his celebrity status to fight racism.

How Evil Are The Heffley Parents?

It’s no secret that the Heffleys are no saints and have committed several crimes and petty Karen behaviors over the years. So let’s assume every story from Greg in every book is true, are the Heffleys just unlucky parents trying their best, or menaces to society? I just thought this would be funny.

Comically Intense Exterminators

I never thought of how common the archetype of evil overly intense exterminators was until now.

There’s Dwayne Lafontant the exterminator from Over the Hedge who installs literal war crimes in people’s back yard to catch rodents and can sniff out what type of animals they are from a distance.

The exterminator from ant bully is seen as a god of death to the ant hill in Billy’s backyard.

In family guy to deal with a flea infestation they call in a whole military crew who destroy the whole house fighting the bugs.

The last time they tried a mundane hobby something tragic happened

We all know the trope of an older man who promised to never hold a weapon again, because of trauma. But tons of shows parody this by having characters trauma tied to a usually harmless hobby. Branch from trolls accidentally got his grandmother killed by singing. Benson tried to warn Mordecai and Rigby from playing Table Hockey because he used to compete in ice hockey death tournaments that got his student killed.

(Loved trope) Good representation in older media

It’s always interesting looking back at older media and seeing the good, bad and in between choices when showing marginalized groups. And it’s especially fun to find the hidden gems that had good representation. Yes, I know Jungle Book is a stretch but compared to Disney’s other work at the time it’s a relief.

In 1968 after MLK died, Charles Schulz was still hesitant to add a black peanuts character fearing it would feel like forced pandering. What finally convinced him was a teacher writing him a letter asking for a black character. And that’s how Franklin was added.

Survivor reference in Diary Of A Wimpy Kid

I was reading Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Hot Mess( yes I read those books still as an adult shut up) and saw this survivor reference. Possibly a reference to Jerri Manthey. It only lets me upload one image but there’s a second drawing of a man named Doug getting voted off. I can’t think of anyone named Doug on the show, at least no one notable, so they may both be just random names.

Bastards who contributed great things to the world?

Bastards are complicated people and a lot of the villains and heroes through history made unexpected contributions to society. Hugh Hefner helping fund Martha Goddards laboratory that created the rape kit along with tons of gay rights activism for the time. What are the bastards that did the most out of pocket good things.

When an actors or creators personal life adds layers to the media.

Kevin Conroy is no doubt one of the greatest voice actors in history, and what helped him create the perfect Batman character was his sexuality. Kevin used his experience as a closeted gay man to channel Bruce Wayne’s double life as Batman.

During the production of beauty and the beast, composer Howard Ashman was diagnosed with HIV and terminally ill. The rose petal countdown for the beast became a grim metaphor for his illness. The crew literally brought a keyboard to his hospital room and he was writing Gaston from it. He died during production and the rest of the movie was finished in his honor.

Moses West, the engineer providing free water to communities with his Atmospheric Water Generator

Stumbled across this very cool guy, Moses and wanted to share. Moses West is a former Army Ranger and engineer who founded the Moses West Foundation in 2015. The idea started out as a generator soldiers can travel with and produce water. Moses West created an Atmospheric Water Generator able to generate hundreds of gallons of water a day to be handed out in regions suffering from droughts, hurricanes, and poisoned water pipes. 7 gallons of water sold for a dollar. The foundation's goal is setting up permanent generators in Caribbean countries hit by hurricanes every year.

(Funny trope) Scenes with people pretending to play Video Games badly

If you watch back on scenes of characters playing video games, especially in the 2000s and before you’ll be shocked by how badly they represent the game. A lot of them just put a controller in an actors hand who has never held it before have them shout shit like high score! With bleeps and bloops while they play a ps3.

In Rumble In the Bronx the kid in the movie plays with a game gear that has no cartridge in it, meaning he’s staring at a blank screen the whole time. The game gear comes prepackaged with a game, did they not know how to insert cartridges or did Jackie Chan karate chop it.

I used the house clip for something different but so many people fixated on House saying “level 4” for Metroid Zero Mission, a game with no levels.

Dr House despite being a middle aged doctor is a big gamer. He references Pokemon, Metroid and call of duty throughout the city. He’s also into cheesy soap operas and teen romance novels.

During a (deleted?) office scene, Stanley accidentally drops his book and it turned out to be filled with hentai which he says is art.

Marcel Petiot; The French Mayor Turned Serial Killer Who Investigated His Own Crimes.

Marcel Petiot was a con artist and serial killer in the early 1900s that I figured would be right up yalls alley. He was a French during world war 1 but was discharged from the army for stealing blankets and disturbing behavior. After his service he went to school and achieved a medical degree. As a doctor Marcel was accused of selling narcotics, backdoor abortions and stealing from patients. There's also allegations that he killed some patients, either on purpose or from medical malpractice. The Daughter of a patient he had an affair with went missing in 1926.

In 1931 he was elected mayor of Villeneuve-sur-Yonne and got right to scheming. He later had to resign from mayor after being caught stealing electricity and city funds. During WW2 and the Nazi occupation of France, Marcel went by the identity of 'Dr Eugene' and pretended to be a French resistance fighter. He faked connections to an underground railroad, sneaking Jews out of the country for money, but when people arrived at his house they were drugged and murdered. Marcel murdered at least 26 people this way, but going around pretending to save Jews got him arrested by the Gestapo who found no evidence he was a resistance fighter. In 1944 when France was liberated, police found burned bodies in Marcels basement and put a warrant for him. Marcel came up with his final fake con, he created the persona of respected French rebel Henri Valeri who was recruited as a police captain by the FFI. As a Captain he was put on the team tasked with finding Marcel. This did not work and he was arrested before he could flee the country.

Marcel claimed the bodies in his basement were only Germans and double agents. During trial his resistance connections were debunked and he was charged with 27 counts of murder. Though he may have killed dozens more, claiming he killed 60 enemies of France. He was executed by Guillotine in 1946.

This is a very interesting subgenre of bastards. When war time and tension creates the perfect storm for psychopaths to take advantage. Probably in part the public and media has glorified vigilantism and being a soldier. The main one the show has covered before is Louis Van Schoor, the security guard who murdered black people and framed them of burglaries. Not because Louis was murderous levels of racism but because he was an adrenaline junkie obsessed with shoot outs and literally hunting people. I am fascinated by this area of history that could potentially always exist. The only other example I can think of off the top of my head is Marcel Petiot.

An example would be the Sham Wow commercial salesman Vince Offer. Someone you remember from memes but was never a mainstream celebrity, you’d never guess he has a very interesting life and is also a piece of shit. He ran for congress as an anti woke Republican who tried to put “shamwow” on the ballot. The other example the show has covered would be the sea monkeys guy, Harold Braunhut.

The first exposure I and I think a lot of Gen Z had to AI chatbots was Cleverbot Evie that went viral from YouTubers baiting them into saying funny shit. It started a whole sub genre of spin off chatbots. It had a much more basic script and was harmless but it definitely helped spread people’s interest in a AI you can vent to.

They brought up in the episode that Lou Ferrigno and Steven Seagal were members of Joe Arpaios posse but that only scratches the surface on mainstream celebrities who supported him. Shaquille O’Neal became a Maricopa County Sheriffs Department deputy in 2006 visiting tent city inmates for a photo shoot. 2 years later he was fired by Joe Arpaio for insulting Kobe in a rap song. There’s also Ted Nugent, Charles Barkley, Frankie Muniz and possibly Alec Baldwin…?

The four most iconic bots that represent the tv show best. My Mount Rushmore would be; Tombstone, Huge, Witch Doctor and Minotaur.

One of the largest cults in my home state was Dwight Yorks Nuwaubian Nation commune. Dwight was a black nationalist and Islamic Hebrew who broke off from the Nation of Islam to form an independent community based in Egyptian mythology where he’d dress like a pharaoh. Hundreds of followers lived on the commune where Dwight groomed and sexually abused dozens of women and minors. He was arrested in 2004 and received a life sentence for sex trafficking.

Ok so spoilers for the movie. Riddler leaves photos of mobsters and corrupt officials leaving the iceberg lounge at his crime scenes. It’s revealed near the end that the riddler lived in the apartment across the street looking down at the lounge and that’s how he took the photos. Meaning this movie would have been an hour shorter if Batman thought about what angle these photos were taken from and stumbled onto the obvious serial killer apartment.
