Could the USSR reunify under Ukraine?
I (german, 40) have researched history of the USSR, and had the following thoughts:
- The USSR: the USSR was overall a good thing, and I would prefer it to peacefully coexist with the European Union in the future. There are differences, but also a lot of common ground and economic advantages.
- Effects of Ukraine war: To me it starts to look, that Ukraine is emerging as stronger than Russia since some time. They have proven to be superior in will power and morale. However, a russian defeat might shake up the federations existence as a whole, but there is a commonly shared alignment that its nuclear weapons have to be controlled and contained.
External forces exerting control seem unlikely, however Ukraine taking over could be the lesser evil for russian elites after Putin. It would be a kind of East vs West Rome thing, but not the end of the world for any party involved.
- History: Russian culture and early dynasty both started in the RUS (please correct me where wrong), but thats todays Ukraine, not Russia.
Moscow and St. Petersburg should therefore not present themselves as "true and only true Russia" and hence, superior to Kiew. On that basis, one can even think of an appropriation / psyops by moscoow elites, a remnant of the tsarist era that has its pros, but also its cons.
Orthodox church: From a religious perspective, the outcome of the war could cause orthodox leadership to shift towards Kiew in the next 100 years - 200 years, but here I dont know enough to even guess.
This slight shift in power for the prize of a strong, unified USSR would prove some western narratives wrong, e.g. it would prove that the USSR has NOT just been a cover up project for Russian imperialism.
At the same time, Ukraine wouldn't join the EU and NATO, so Moscow elites would get something in return and save face, as long as Putins network will be visibly removed from power.
Would this be a possible way out of the war?
