Hi everyone,
I’m looking for a budget but solid binocular for an upcoming trip to Borneo (rainforest + river areas). Use case is mainly hiking/trekking and spotting wildlife (primates, birds, etc.), often in humid conditions and sometimes in lower light (early morning / late afternoon, under canopy).
Budget: ~€150–€180 (buying in Europe).
I’m currently torn between these two:
Option A — Vortex Crossfire HD 8x42 (roof) — ~€155
8x42, roof prism
Pros (on paper): larger objective for low light, closer focus, strong warranty reputation
Cons: heavier/bulkier for all-day trekking
Option B — Kowa YF II 8x30 (Porro) — ~€179
8x30, Porro prism
Pros (on paper): noticeably lighter, often good “3D” image/contrast from Porro designs
Cons: smaller objective for low light, longer close focus (and maybe not as weather-sealed as roofs?)
What I care about (priority order)
Real-world performance in rainforest light (contrast/detail, not just brightness)
Ease of acquiring moving subjects (birds/monkeys), stability/hand-hold feel
Fogging resistance / durability in hot & humid conditions
Portability for long hikes (weight/size matters)
Questions
If you had to pick between these two for this specific trip, which one would you choose and why?
In rainforest/wildlife use, is 8x42 roof generally the safer bet, or does a good 8x30 Porro still make more sense for travel?
Any better alternatives under €200 in Europe (new or used) that clearly beat both of these for wildlife/travel?
Thanks!
