TIL in 1996, during a period of high tensions between Greece and Turkey, the Greek air-force shot down a Turkish fighter-jet that had (allegedly) violated Greek air-space, killing the Turkish pilot. This marked the first (and only) time a Nato members air-force was targeted by another Nato member.
New stats show Greece has the 20th largest air-force - and the 14th most fighter-jets. These numbers put Greece ahead of Spain and Poland, as well as ahead of Germany, England, and Italy, for fighter-jets. do you think this sort of military spending is reasonable, and where does your country rank?
On this day, 200 years ago: Greece commemorates the 200th anniversary of the historic Exodus of Messolonghi, one the most pivotal events of the Greek War of independence.
