On this day (April 28) in Nintendo history...

  • The Game & Watch series  was released in 1980 in Japan. This series of handheld electronic games, developed by Nintendo R&D1, was produced by Nintendo from 1980 to 1991. Created by game designer Gunpei Yokoi, each Game & Watch features a single game to be played on an LCD screen in addition to a clock, an alarm, or both. It was the earliest Nintendo video game product to gain major success. The units are based on a 4-bit CPU from the Sharp SM5xx family, that include a small ROM and RAM area and an LCD screen driver circuit, although prior to the emulation in MAME there was a misconception in that every unit used a custom ASIC instead of a proper microcontroller. The series sold a combined of 43.4 million units worldwide. The Game & Watch made handheld video games vastly popular. Many toy companies followed in the footsteps of Game & Watch, such as Tiger Electronics and their Star Wars themed games. Nintendo's Game & Watch units were eventually superseded by the original Game Boy.
  • Ball  was released in 1980 for the Game & Watch Silver in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, move the doll's hands left and right to catch the balls as they come back down. As you get more points, the balls get faster.
  • Snoopy Tennis  was released in 1982 for the Game & Watch Wide Screen in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, Charlie Brown and Snoopy are playing tennis. Charlie is hitting the balls and Snoopy has to climb onto the branches of the tree and swing his racket to return them. You score 2 points for every ball returned from Charlie Brown and 3 points for every ball returned from Lucy. If you miss then the ball breaks some bottles. Three misses and the game ends.
  • Donkey Kong Junior  was released in 1983 for the Game & Watch Table Top in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, Mario has captured Donkey Kong, and it's up to his son, Donkey Kong Junior, to carry the key from the start to DK's lock, dodging fierce birds along the way. Junior can climb the vines up and down the platforms to reach higher ground. He can use Umbrellas to rise up and balloons to drift downwards to reach DK's lock. Open all four locks to free DK and receive a bonus score.
  • Mario's Cement Factory  was released in 1983 for the Game & Watch Table Top in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, cement is being fed into hoppers from chutes at the top of the screen. Mario has to move up and down on the moving platforms to pull the levers on the hoppers, passing the cement to the waiting trucks below. Each hopper can only hold three loads of cement before spilling over onto the truck drivers. Keep moving and don't let any of the hoppers overflow.
  • VS. Clu Clu Land  was released in 1992 for the Family Computer Disk System in Japan. This puzzle game, developed by Nintendo, is a port of the arcade version. This was also available in Animal Crossing, where it was given the name Clu Clu Land D  in the U.S. and Europe.
  • Super Bomberman 2  was released in 1994 for the Super Famicom in Japan. In this action/maze/party game, developed by Produce!, aliens set on universal domination, have sent a team of evil cyborgs to confront the mighty Bomberman! With Bomberman trapped in an underground prison, the aliens are free to carry out their evil plans with little opposition.
  • The Tower SP  was released in 2005 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this construction and management simulation remake of the PC's SimTower, developed by Vivarium, the player is tasked to construct a tower for their company boss, Yama. Perhaps due to the limitations of the Game Boy Advance's system, the "Tower" status (the highest available tower rating) is obtained with a population of 2000 people; a goal which is quite hard considering the height limit for the building is 50 floors (35 floors for the commercial tower).
  • Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2  was released in 2010 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. In this role-playing game, developed by Tose, Monster Scouts are famed for their talent at training monsters - they tame wild beasts and assemble teams of amazing creatures, which they then send into ferocious, raging battles against other Monster Scout teams. The most courageous commanders of critters meet every year in the Monster Scout Challenge, where they battle for the honour of becoming world champion. Just getting to the Monster Arena where the event takes place is difficult enough though.
  • Tsukutte Utau Saru Band  was released in 2010 for DSiWare in Japan. In this rhythm-action game, developed by MuuMuu, Prince Saruno and his subjects in the Sarudamon Kingdom have joined together to make a band. You can start with simple keywords and your monkey-band will automatically generate a song to play. Alternatively you can write longer pieces for them. Share your songs with friends wirelessly.

On this day (April 24) in Nintendo history...

  • Nintendo World Cup  was released in 1991 for the Game Boy in Japan. In this sports game, developed by Technōs Japan, thirteen national teams compete in a world cup to become number one. At its core, the game follows the rules of soccer, but with noticeable differences. Each team has only six players (a goalkeeper, two defenders, a midfielder and two forwards). The players control only one of them, but they can give commands (Pass/Shoot) to the others.
  • The Satellaview  was released in 1995 in Japan. A satellite modem peripheral developed by Nintendo R&D2 for the Super Famicom. The Satellaview received scrambled signals during "Super Famicom Hour" from the satellite radio company St.GIGA, to which users would have to pay a subscription fee. The scrambled signals were decoded as digital magazines and games that could be saved to a Memory Pak. Some games provided a competitive element, sending score or time data back to Nintendo. Special "Soundlink" games were often played exclusively during certain broadcast hours, often leading to competitive play. These broadcasts would typically feature actors whose voices would be broadcast during the game. Satellaview games were broadcast episodically in weekly or sometimes daily instalments, usually with a total of four parts. As new episodes were added, players would either be confronted with new levels and maps or their original gameworld would become further unlocked allowing exploration of new areas in-game.
