What kind of salary is actually enough to live comfotably in Edinburgh?
I recently changed jobs, and my salary increased from 26k to 32k. I was obviously very happy with this increase as it's a noticeable amount extra every month. The first few months I had a couple hundred I could put into savings (which i could never do before, because of rent) which felt great. After some time, though, my rent went up, council tax went up, food appears to be going up (though im not buying any more or better brands), and i had some emergency spending (like having to replace my phone that completely died on me - and i only bought a cheap second hand one).
Despite initially thinking I finally started to make enough to save for a flat of my own, I now feel like I'm in exactly the same financial position as before my salary increase, in terms of having anything leftover after essential costs. It feels so deflating, that even when in theory things should be getting better, it just seems to be just as hard.
I genuinely used to think 30k+ salary was like upper middle class, and its been very a very eye opening experience to realise thats not the case at all. How much does someone actually have to earn in Edinburgh to actually live comfortably, and have a bit left over to save?
