I think Soi Animatica is saying more about Youtube as a platform than one might initially guess.
The channel is a long-running ARG, posting semi-frequently for the last two years. Almost every video (24 as of writing) connects via recurring characters, settings, and themes. They all hide puzzles, ciphers, clues, etc. and one video, the most recent part of there "Wilson" series, links to a password-protected zip file, looking in the comments nobody seems to have cracked it yet.
The videos really lean into a nostalgic, creepy 3D style that is really reminiscent of early Youtube creators like RatboyGenius and Nicholas Federov. The video that I linked best exemplifies the channel in my opinion: its like it was specifically designed in spite of Youtube’s algortihm. The title and thumbnail are literaly just the title and an image of the main character, the runtime is just over 20 minutes (which is incredibly long for what I'm certain is a one-person channel), and it features a load of copyrighted music - pretty much all of it written into the story so that it almost doesnt even work/make sense without it. What I think convinced me of the claim made in the post title is that right at the end of the linked video there is a satirical “call-to-action”. Instead of asking for "likes and subscribes", the character says “If you liked the video remember to send me videos of you doing a backflip!”
As I said, there are 23 other videos on the channel which all seem to build into the larger narrative. I think it could definately interest others here (possibly even the main FilmTheorists channel!). I’m excited to see what else there is to be uncovered!
