trying to take gary burton's grip advice
hey marimbists - first of all, sorry for having to ask this here. the vibraphone and percussion subs are currently under-moderated and it looks like i can't post there. this is in fact a vibraphone question, however the principles are not exclusive to vibraphone and i thought people here might have thoughts.
surely anyone looking into burton grip has seen this video of the man himself explaining it. in the video, he advises students to always keep four mallets in their hands, even when playing two mallet passages. i've taken this to heart.
it creates some problems with certain chord and scale shapes, however. i notice most people tend to play two-mallet passages with mallets 2 and 4, however for some shapes 2 and 3 seem to make more sense.
for anyone who chooses to keep four mallets in the hands at all times... how does this affect your scalar and arpeggiated practice? how do you navigate getting your hands out of each other's way? i feel like i have baggage making me want to stick with 2 and 4 whenever possible... how reasonable is that baggage?
thanks!
