Framing glass art

I'm a newbie glass artist, and I want to display my art in shadow boxes. I got overwhelmed with options and I thought maybe asking some experts would be a good idea.

I do glass casting, and the finished pieces are small - the size of a child's hand - and 3D. I want the glass piece to have a little distance from the back of the frame to give a floating effect. Im not sure how deep a frame for this should be - a deeper frame allows for the 3D effect of the art to be appreciated and lets light play in there nicely, but too deep may end up blocking light from the sides. I also considered using acrylic as the front pane of the shadow box *hear me out* because the glass art doesn't need the additional protection from a glass pane, and though rare, I don't want the glass art to clink against the front pane with movement.

So I guess my main questions are, aside from just trying one metric ton of shadow boxes, is there an easier way to figure things out like the depth of the box and amount of empty space around the art? I've been drilling a small hole and hanging my pieces with clear finishing line, but is there a better approach? What else should I consider, or what am I thinking too hard about that isn't a big deal after all?
