Non-Hearsay; Effect on the Listener

I've tried Barbri, Themis, Quimbee, Short & Happy Guide, E&E, Google search, and Youtube videos to no avail. Can someone please explain in simple terms what "Effect on the Listener" means?

I understand that it's not considered Hearsay because the out of court statement is not being offered for the truth of the matter asserted, but what does it mean and how can I spot it? An example in a Themis video was that if a witness testified that a letter was sent to an insurance company and stated that a boat sunk on a certain date that this would be considered "Effect on the Listener" and not Hearsay. Is that because you're essentially offering it to show that they were aware of the boat sinking? SOS
