[Rolex vs Omega] Milestone Matchup

Hey watch fam,

So I recently started my Doctoral degree and plan on getting my second luxury watch when I graduate in a couple of years. My first big watch was my Rolex Air-King, which I daily and absolutely love. For my next piece I want something that sets itself apart from my Air-King, giving some diversity in use, look and complication. Currently, my top two contenders are the Rolex Batgirl and the white dial Omega Speedmaster.

Case for the Batgirl. Huge fan of Rolex wearability, I love the substantial anchored feeling while still being so comfortable as a daily. The GMT would lend itself useful to traveling(though these days it seems that safety may be a concern). The jubilee dresses the watch up and provides some contrast to my AK’s oyster. The design is timeless, obviously there is value-though I plan to keep the watch forever so not my main concern. As a fun extra, I have been a huge Batman fan my whole life and have considered incorporating some themes into my thesis to further connect this watch to my milestone. Cons-despite the differences the watch still feels pretty similar to my Air-King in wear. Would not want it to replace my Air King but rather complement it. Also plan to get a Bluesy for my military retirement and a 3 Rolex collection feels pretty redundant…

The Case for the Speedy. I’ve tried on this watch probably 5 times now over the last couple of years and I love it more each time. I love the beautiful lacquered white dial, and display case back. I love the history of this watch and find it especially cool that we are in the new space age with the Artemis missions. I have a lunar pilot and actually enjoy using the chronograph function. The watch feels very different on wrist than my Rolex, much lighter and almost vintage, will dress up better than my AK. The bracelet is nice and it’s much more versatile on strap than a GMT. Obviously iconic, readily available and cheaper than the GMT. Something about white dial and doctor seem to work very well together, this watch seems like a great way to mark a milestone of achievement. Fun extra- plan to get my kids moonswatches to share in the excitement if I go this route. Cons- Omegas price increases and QC issues I’ve been seeing give me some pause, as an honest comparison the GMT does feel like the better watch.

Thanks for reading, would love to hear any thoughts from those who have experienced either of these. For those interested the other watches on my short list are the Explorer II polar, Cartier Santos and JLC Reverso.
