Why are people obsessed with pets with exaggerated features?

Why do so many people seem to find pets with exaggerated features so appealing? I'm talking things like munchkin cats with their crazy short legs or pugs with their super smooshed snouts - I just don't get what people find so appealing about animals like this, especially since they are prone to extra health issues. I work in an animal shelter and its crazy how many times people ask about these sorts of breeds - and I just don't understand the appeal over a more proportional animal.

Sometimes a fart isn't just a fart...at least rat turds are easy to clean up!
