Open WRT - What are the benefits?

Hello folks just a quick one. I recently purchased a flint 2 router and not sold on it yet.

Upgraded to 4.8.4 last week and reverted back to 4.8.3. As soon as i did this the wifi connection lights on my home plugs around the house went from red to green.

I watched a video on YouTube yesterday about open WRT but to be honest i haven't really got a clue about this sort of stuff and was wondering if someone could help.

What would be the benefits of moving to this. The youtube video i watched showed that the router then has a different sign in screen and the interface layout is completely different to the glinet one.

Thanks
