How do HCOL areas retain staff?

Always been a bit curious how super expensive areas even manage to hire and retain staff? I’m talking NYC, SanFran, LA, Miami. Do they have contractors or is it treated more as a fast food job for young folk?

Am I crazy for seriously considering a 40 minute walk to work?

Sold my car and glad I will no longer have car payments to deal with. But I’m getting cold feet about it after I told my mom what I did. I actually enjoy walking but I never did it commuting for work. I live in South Florida and my job already requires a ton of walking (mail carrier). Just don’t want to wear myself out long term. Should I supplement a one way commute with Uber to ease the burden and give myself more time? Just wanted opinions from anybody who has done something similar.
