A Girl with No Talent
Joy Bennett is a twenty-year-old apprentice at Solenne Ballet. Her proportions aren't built for this world — her ratio is off compared to the girls around her, her arch exists but doesn't read as beautiful, her lines fall just short of what this art form demands. Not objectively broken, just never quite enough. She sits at the bottom of the company and everyone knows it. Maybe that's exactly why people don't mind her — she's easy to be around and she's not after anyone's spot. The principals ignore her, the corps tolerates her, and some of them are even genuinely warm. She has more friends in this building than anyone, and a dimmer future than most of them. She knows that too. She goes home, ices her feet, stares at the ceiling, and thinks about how she hit the same wall she hit last week. Then she comes back the next morning anyway.
