Diagnosing Overheating in Old Civic
Mechanics of Reddit, I'm at my wit's end. Which isn't that surprising because I'm not too far from the beginning, but still.
Problem: Car temp spikes to about 3/4 up the gauge when driving uphill at high speeds. A/C cuts off, heat works
Car Facts:
- 2001 Honda Civic, manual 5-speed, 1.7L engine
- 281k miles
- Water pump and timing belt changed about 35k miles ago. I had her in the shop for something else recently, and the mechanics had the timing cover off without mentioning the belt or pump.
- New thermostat
- New radiator in 2023
- New coolant temp sensor
- Radiator fans click on and off normally
- Car passes pressure test every time I have a mechanic do one
- New radiator cap
I know it's an old car, but they just don't make neat little manual 5-speeds like that anymore.
Any ideas? No mechanics in my area seem to know what to do.
