African Philosophy in African Script: The Zulu "Ubuntu" Proverb in Chivabwe

"A person is a person because of other people." This post demonstrates how the iconic isiZulu proverb "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu" is written in Chivabwe, a modern hybrid abugida designed specifically for the phonetic rhythms of Bantu languages.

Reference Table: Chivabwe Symbols and Their Variants (Chichebwe Context)

Here is the latest reference table for the alphabetic side of Chivabwe. This chart covers the base symbols, their Latin translations, and the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) values to show how precisely the script handles Bantu sounds.

I created a new writing system for African languages called Chivabwe

Chivabwe is a newly developed writing system designed to represent the sounds of Bantu languages such as Chichewa, chiShona, isiNdebele, kiSwahili and many more across Africa.

While African languages already make use of either the Latin alphabet or Arabic letters, they do not fully represent many sounds of African languages accurately as they waer not designed to. Chivabwe was developed to accurately represent the sounds of African languages, be a source of pride for us as Africans as well as to promote the development and use of our African languages and cultural identities.

These are a few illustrations in the Chivabwe writing system.

Is this a good step towards promoting our African languages and culture with something of our own?

Did you know that many African languages are written using alphabets that weren't originally designed for their unique sounds?(repost)

In this first post, we’re looking at the word Amanzi, which means "Water" in Zulu and Ndebele. In the Chivabwe script, we don't just use separate letters, we use a "hybrid abugida" system where consonants form the base and vowels modify the character's shape, reflecting the actual flow of speech.

Note:

It's important to note that Chivabwe is a writing system (script), not a language itself. It is a powerful tool used to write the languages we already speak, like Shona and Ndebele, with more precision than the Latin alphabet.

What word should we write next? Comment below! 👇

How to write 'Mambo' (King) in Chivabwe

In this example, we show the transcription of 'Mambo' in the Chivabwe writing system. Do you notice how the character for 'O' is a dot?

Explore the Chivabwe writing system, a modern hybrid abugida designed specifically for Bantu languages. This post features the Shona word "Nzira" (meaning: Path, Road, or Way), showcasing the script's unique geometric structure and phonetic precision.

Language: ShonaIPA: [ⁿzi.ɾa]

Script Type: Hybrid Abugida

Meaning: A literal or metaphorical path.

I’ve been working on Chivabwe, a hybrid abugida designed for Bantu languages, and wanted to share a breakdown of how the system actually builds a word.

Image 1: Shows the word Dzidza (Learn in chiShona). I’ve included the translations for Swahili (Funza) and Zulu/Xhosa (Funda).

Image 2: Breaks down the visual logic. It shows how the Chichabwe character(combined character) for the syllable "Dzi" is formed by merging the Chichebwe character(alphabetic base) components for D, Z, and I.

I used color-coding in the second slide to make the geometric synthesis easier to follow:

Black: The consonant "D"

Red: The consonant "Z"

Blue: The vowel "I"

This demonstrates the "hybrid" nature of the script, it’s not just a block, but a logical combination of its parts. Happy to answer any questions about the phonetic rules and more!
