Dingwall D-Roc - 4 or 5 strings?
Hi, all
I’m currently considering picking up a Dingwall D-Roc, but I’ve hit a bit of a dilemma: I can't decide between the 4 and 5-string versions. Since I already own a few 4, 5, and 6-string basses (including a fretless), I don’t really have a 'gap' in my collection that specifically needs filling. My main concern is whether that fifth string will end up getting in the way.
I have relatively small hands (or rather, short fingers), so I usually gravitate toward narrower necks. I know it ultimately comes down to the instrument's purpose, but since this is a significant investment, I really want to avoid any buyer's remorse.
Regarding my playing style: I’ll definitely be doing some slapping, where a 5th string can be a bit of a hindrance. As for the genre, I play a bit of everything—from rock and metal to funk, jazz, and folk.
The big question for me is the B-string itself—is it truly as legendary as people say? If it is, that just adds to my dilemma. On one hand, the 4-string is more comfortable and 'ergonomic' for my hand size; on the other, the 5-string offers that extended range and makes certain lines easier to play without shifting positions constantly.
To those who have experience with both versions: what would you advise? How does the neck profile on the 5-string feel—is it more of a 'fast' neck or a bit chunkier? And most importantly, is that low B really worth the extra string?
