My boyfriend filed as married jointly without my consent
I’m using a throwaway account instead of my main for obvious reasons.
My boyfriend and I lived together for all of 2025 and had a baby together during the year. I am currently a stay at home mom and have no income. He went to the accountant by himself to do taxes, and asked the accountant if there is a way to include me as a dependent. I was okay with that, if there’s a legal way to do it.
Anyway, accountant did the return as married filing jointly. Of course there was a huge refund from doing this. My boyfriend forged my signature at the accountant’s office. I only learned about all of this from finding a copy of the return sitting around in the house.
I feel like my identity has been used to commit tax fraud. He keeps saying there is nothing to worry about. He even called the accountant who said “don’t worry the IRS doesn’t have any access to marriage records.” I think that’s just dumb advice because it’s very easy for them to audit us and then ask for proof of marriage which we obviously don’t have.
Does anyone know what my potential liability is here? What would you do in this situation? Is there a way to anonymously report this so I can set the record straight without imploding my relationship with my son’s father?
