I've heard very often that people in Northern Germany tend to be rather reserved ("wortkarg") and that they don’t really like people who talk too much. I’ve even heard that saying “Moin Moin” is already considered too much and that you’re supposed to just say “Moin.”

So how much talking is actually acceptable in Northern Germany before it becomes socially inappropriate? Or is it better to stay completely silent?

Of course, I understand that you're not supposed to just strike up conversations with strangers or be loud in public, but should you also keep your talking to a minimum even with acquaintances?
