One person the Academy has been very unfair to is composer Thomas Newman - 15 nominations and zero wins. Do you think he's deserved to win in the past?

Just FYI, this is his nomination tally till date... he has 15 nominations with 0 wins so far:-

1995 The Shawshank Redemption - Best Original Score

1995 Little Women - Best Original Score

1996 Unstrung Heroes - Best Original Musical or Comedy Score

2000 American Beauty - Best Original Score

2003 Road to Perdition - Best Original Score

2004 Finding Nemo - Best Original Score

2005 Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events - Best Original Score

2007 The Good German - Best Original Score

2009 Wall-E - Best Original Score

2009 Wall-E - Best Song - Best Original Score

2013 Skyfall - Best Original Score

2014 Saving Mr Banks - Best Original Score

2016 Bridge of Spies - Best Original Score

2017 Passengers - Best Original Score

2020 1917 - Best Original Score

-------

I see his justified tally looking somewhat like this... 5 wins and 18 nominations.

1995 The Shawshank Redemption - Best Original Score - Should have won in a tie with Hans Zimmer's The Lion King

1995 Little Women - Best Original Score

1996 Unstrung Heroes - Best Original Musical or Comedy Score

2000 American Beauty - Best Original Score - Should have won instead of The Red Violin

2000 The Green Mile - Best Original Score - Should have been nominated instead of The Cider House Rules

2002 In The Bedroom - Best Original Score - Should have been nominated instead of Monsters Inc

2003 Road to Perdition - Best Original Score - Should have won in a (yes, call me a fool, but) a 3-way-tie with Elliot Goldenthal for Frida & Philip Glass for The Hours. If ever there was a 3-way-tie justified, THIS would be it.

2004 Finding Nemo - Best Original Score

2005 Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events - Best Original Score - I know it's asking for a lot for this strange, oddball, beautifully left of field score to win, but this, along, with The Village were my favourite scores of the year.

2007 The Good German - Best Original Score - Should not have been nominated, The Fountain by Clint Mansell should have been nominated instead.

2009 Wall-E - Best Original Score

2009 Wall-E - Best Song - Best Original Score

2009 Revolutionary Road - Best Original Score - Should have been nominated instead of Defiance. This is a raw, haunting score that's essential to building the darkness in the plot.

2013 Skyfall - Best Original Score - Should have won instead of Life of Pi. Yes, I repeat. Instead of Life of Pi.

2014 Saving Mr Banks - Best Original Score - Should not have been nominated

2014 Side Effects - Best Original Score - Should have been nominated instead of Saving Mr Banks

2016 Bridge of Spies - Best Original Score

2017 Passengers - Best Original Score

2020 1917 - Best Original Score

2024 Elemental - Best Original Score - Should have been nominated instead of Indiana Jones & the Dial of Destiny

Nicole Kidman has a total of 5 nominations and 1 win at the Oscars? How many nominations and wins do you think shd should have by now?

FYI she's been nominated the following times:

- Moulin Rouge

- The Hours

- Rabbit Hole

- Lion

- Being the Ricardos

-

IMHO she is grossly under-nominated and under-rewarded. She should have at least 3 wins and minimum 13 nominations by now:

- 1995 Best Actress for To Die For (Nominated instead of Sharon Stone for Casino, who would get nominated for Supporting Actress and win)

- 1999 Best Supporting Actress for Eyes Wide Shut (Nominated instead of Catherine Keener in Being John Malkovich)

- 2001 Best Actress for Moulin Rouge (Should have won instead of Halle Berry for Monster's Ball)

- 2001 Best Actress for The Others (Nominated instead of Renee Zelwegger in Bridget Jones' Diary)

- 2002 Best Supporting Actress for The Hours (Should have been this category and should have tied won with Catherine Zeta Jones for Chicago)

- 2003 Best Actress for Dogville (Nominated instead of Diane Keaton for Something's Gotta Give)

- 2004 Best Actress for Birth (Nominated instead of Annette Bening for Being Julia, Should have won instead of Hillary Swank for Million Dollar Baby)

- 2010 Best Actress for Rabbit Hole

- 2012 Best Supporting Actress for The Paperboy (Nominated instead of Jacki Weaver for Silver Linings Playbook)

- 2016 Best Supporting Actress for Lion

- 2018 Best Actress for Destroyer (Nominated instead of Yalitza Aparacio for Roma)

- 2022 Best Supporting Actress for The Northman (Nominated instead of Hong Chau for The Whale)

- 2024 Best Actress for Babygirl (Nominated instead of Karla Sofia Gascon for Emilia Perez)

-

PS: Renate Reinsve for The Worst Person in the World would receive the nomination instead of Being the Ricardos in 2021

FYI, she's been nominated for and she won for Michael Clayton. She wins the trophy for most egregiously snubbed as a career.

-

Realistically, her tally should be DRASTICALLY different. She should be clocking in at 7 nominations and 3 wins:-

- 1991 Best Supporting Actress for Edward II (Would Win possibly in a tie with Mercedes Ruehl for The Fisher King, Would get nominated instead of Kate Nelligan for The Prince of Tides)

- 2001 Best Actress for The Deep End (Would get nominated instead of Renee Zelwegger for Bridget Jones' Diary)

- 2009 Best Actress for I Am Love (Would get nominated instead of Annette Bening for The Kids are All Right)

- 2007 Best Supporting Actress for Michael Clayton (Deserved win)

- 2014 Best Supporting Actress for Snowpiercer (Would get nominated instead of Meryl Streep for Into the Woods)

- 2011 Best Actress for We Need to Talk About Kevin (Would win instead of Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady. Would get nominated instead of Viola Davis for The Help which would compete in Supporting)

- 2023 Best Supporting Actress for The Room Next Door (Would get nominated instead of America Ferrera for Barbie)

FYI her nominations and wins are:

The English Patient - Won

Chocolat

-

I think realistically, her tally should look like 8 nominations and 2 wins:

- 1993 Best Actress for Three Colours, Blue (Would win in a tie with Holly Hunter for The Piano. Would have been nominated instead of Stockard Channing in Six Degrees of Separation.)

- 1996 Best Supporting Actress for The English Patient (Would not win, would go to Lauren Bacall for The Mirror has Two Faces)

- 2000 Best Actress for Chocolat

- 2005 Best Actress for Cache (Would Win. Would have been nominated instead of Judi Dench for Mrs. Henderson Presents. Would win instead of Reese Witherspoon for Walk the Line)

- 2006 Best Supporting Actress for Breaking and Entering (Would have been nominated instead of Abigail Breslin in Little Miss Sunshine)

- 2010 Best Actress for Certified Copy (Would have been nominated instead of Annette Bening for The Kids are All Right)

- 2015 Best Actress for Clouds of Sils Maria (Would have been nominated instead of Jennifer Lawrence for Joy)

- 2023 Best Supporting Actress for The Taste of Things (Would have been nominated instead of America Ferrera for Barbie)

I understand there being celebrities who are insanely great voice actors and they add heaps to characters... and I even understand the need for a Hollyood star name to pull some crowds, but that isn't quite the yardstick needed for television animation. I mean some of the most famous animated shows have voice actors as their stars, ie Simpsons, Family Guy, Rick and Morty, Bob's Burgers, South Park, etc. Even shows like The Mighty Nein and Vox Machina are just sublime and I don't NEED a big name because the story and craft are enough. Arcane and Blue Eyed Samurai were brilliant but it was just the leads that were (relatively) known names. I'm vexed by the need for shows like Invincible (which I LOVE, just to clear any confusion) to prioritise celeb voices over craft tbh as we all saw how it suffered this season. What do you guys think?

These are the 4 weakest set of acting nominees in the past 25 years IMHO.

In 2005, I'd have these as the Best Actress Nominees:

Juliette Binoche - Cache - WIN

Felicity Huffman - Transamerica

Joan Allen - The Upside of Anger

Julia Jentsch - Sophie Scholl: The Final Days

Keira Knightley - Pride & Prejudice

-

In 2018, I'd have these as the Best Actor Nominees:

Ethan Hawke - First Reformed - WIN

Ben Foster - Leave No Trace

Bradley Cooper - A Star is Born

Joaquin Phoenix - You Were Never Really Here

Willem Dafoe - At Eternity’s Gate

-
In 2023, I'd have these as the Best Supporting Actress Nominees:

Lily Gladstone - Killers of the Flower Moon - WIN

Carey Mulligan - Maestro

Emily Blunt - Oppenheimer

Julianne Moore - May December

Juliette Binoche - The Taste of Things

-
In 2011, I'd have these as Best Supporting Actor Nominees:

Christopher Plummer - Beginners - WIN

Albert Brooks - Drive

Ezra Miller - We Need to Talk About Kevin

John Hawkes - Martha Marcy May Marlene

Patton Oswald - Young Adult

-

Which year did you find the weakest nominees?

Notes on a Scandal

I'm Not There

- 2001 Best Supporting Actress for Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (Nominated instead of Kate Winslet for Iris)

IMHO, I think the following shows needed their MVP rewarded for any justice in the world :-

- Marcia Cross for Desperate Housewives over Felicity Huffman for sure. And she should have been nominated multiple times over the course of multiple seasons.

- Cynthia Nixon & SJP were good but Kim Cattrall deserved the Emmy the most of the four women.

- Michael C Hall & Frances Conroy deserved at least one Emmy for their roles on Six Feet Under.

- Christina Hendricks was the next best thing on Mad Men after Jon Hamm, and she deserved at least one win as opposed to Anna Gunn and Maggie Smith winning multiple trophies for Breaking Bad and Downton Abbey.

- Jane Krakowski got unjustly snubbed despite being riproaringly funny on 30 Rock, and could have honestly won any of the many years Alison Janney kept winning for Mom.

- While Lisa Kudrow and Jennifer Aniston both have Emmys, Matthew Perry deserved a win for being consistently the funniest alongside Lisa Kudrow on Friends.

- Kristen Wiig DESERVED a win every single year she was nominated for Saturday Night Live!!!

- Anthony Carrigan was consistently the funniest on Barry and never won. Could have easily won one of the 2 years Brett Goldstein won for Ted Lasso.

- I don't understand how Sofia Vergara and Jesse Tyler Ferguson never won a single award. I'd have swapped them out for the double wins from Eric Stonestreet and Julia Bowen and spread the love.

PS: A couple of rules of engagement… This is an entirely subjective exercise and I'd urge to keep the spirit of the forum positive. If you find someone’s choice baffling, why not ask them the reason behind it in the spirit of constructive discourse. Let's be curious about everyone's subjective opinions without dissing each other. Let's start conversations... and keep the positivity flowing!

PPS: This is a subjective exercise, but I'm trying to still follow as many of the Academy's rules as possible.

- The nominee list is as per the rules of 2026 Oscars, be it the number of nominees or the categores.

- Only doing Feature Film nominations, so leaving out shorts and docu categories, as I'm grossly behind wrt watching the possible contenders in each year.

- Let's celebrate a tie if it has to be a tie 😄 It's our wishlist after all! Where else would we make such a thing happen!

- My take on Picture, International Film: The most impactful, important, innovating and/or memorable film

- My take on Director is about a unique, innovative and/or impactful vision for a film.

- My take on Score & Song is subjective, if it's largely original, then it's up for noms.

- My take on performances is about the depth of nuance, impact of the performance the the film and memorability of the performance.

- Performer rules are in play, for eg, one actor cannot receive more than 1 nomination in 1 category. I'd refrain from obvious category fraud and will nominate actors in lead or supporting as per my understanding of who the true lead was.

- My take on all craft & writing categories is about the impact of the craft on the film and the innovation/impact/meticulousness of vision.

IMHO, these films deserved to get nominated in their respective year... fyi this doesn't mean the work on the ones i'm replacing wasn't great, just that it was something less original and fresh, and I would have gladly used that slot for the film I'm suggesting:

- The Royal Tenenbaums instead of The Affair of the Necklace 2002

- Star Wars: Attack of the Clones instead of The Pianist 2003

- Kill Bill: Volume 1 instead of Seabiscuit 2004

- 2046 instead of Mrs Henderson Presents 2006

- The Dark Knight + Hellboy: The Golden Army instead of Revolutionary Road & The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2009

- Watchmen + Star Trek + A Single Man instead of Bright Star, The Young Victoria & Coco Before Chanel 2010

- Black Swan instead of True Grit 2011

- Thor instead of Anonymous 2012

- Cloud Atlas instead of Lincoln 2013

- Man of Steel + The Hunger Games - Catching Fire instead of The Invisible Woman & 12 Years a Slave 2014

- Star Wars:  The Last Jedi + Thor Ragnarok instead of Darkest Hour & Victoria & Abdul 2018

- Aquaman instead of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs 2019

- Birds of Prey instead of Pinocchio 2021

- The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes instead of Oppenheimer 2024

- The Fantastic Four instead of Avatar: Fire & Ash 2026

Little Children

Revolutionary Road - Should have won Best Actress
