Bought for £50 at a charity shop — turns out it’s a stamped Gillow & Co Lancaster Victorian revolving piano chair? UK
Picked up this Victorian piano/music chair from a UK charity shop for £50 and only noticed when it arrived that it’s stamped twice with “Gillow & Co Lancaster” underneath. There is no serial number that i can see.
The chair is very heavy, walnut (probably idk), has a revolving seat, and structurally solid. The red/orange velvet upholstery is worn (most likely a more recent addition) and the back cushion is missing, but otherwise it’s in good condition for its age.
The charity shop listed the chair as follows:
Antique Revolving Music/Child's Ornate
Chair
Estimated to be a late Victorian item.
The wood is probably walnut, but not confirmed.
Seat height = 44 cm.
Very heavy for a chair.
The back cushion is missing and the seat cushion has some damage.
The seat rotates, but not very smoothly.
The framework is very sturdy.
I know nothing about antiques and only learnt about Gillow upon googling the name stamped under the chair out of curiosity.
I tried to see if anyone had listed a similar/the same chair online but unfortunately i couldn’t find anything ):
Any information regarding the approximate date, whether this is a known Gillows design, original purpose (piano chair/music chair?) & it’s value/rarity would be greatly appreciated.
