One of the most fascinating places to visit in the country is Kunta Kinteh Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site connected to the transatlantic slave trade and the story that inspired “Roots.
What surprises many visitors is that the experience is much more than just visiting an island. The journey usually includes:
- a traditional boat trip along the river
- visiting Juffureh and Albreda villages
- hearing oral history passed down through generations
- exploring the ruins of the old fort
- meeting members of the Kinteh family still living there today
Many travelers are shocked to discover that descendants connected to Kunta Kinteh’s family can still be visited in the village and are happy to share stories and history with visitors.
As a Gambian, I think it’s one of the most emotional and meaningful experiences in the country because it combines history, culture and real local connection in a very authentic way.
