Dual DNS Setup: DoT on Android System + DoH on Chrome. Is it safe/efficient?
Hi everyone,
I’m an Android user currently running a "split" DNS configuration and I want to make sure I’m not breaking anything.
- System level: I’m using DoT (DNS over TLS) via AdGuard in the Android Private DNS settings.
- Browser level: I’m using DoH (DNS over HTTPS) within Google Chrome's settings.
I live in a country with strict DNS-based censorship. Interestingly, when I only use DoT at the system level, sites like Reddit remain blocked. However, once I enable DoH inside Chrome, I can bypass the restrictions easily.
I have a few questions:
- Is it safe to use two different protocols (DoT and DoH) simultaneously?
- Will this cause any system conflicts, latency issues, or excessive battery drain?
- Why does DoH in the browser successfully bypass the block while the system-wide DoT fails, even though both might be pointed at the same provider?
I'd appreciate any insights or technical explanations. Thanks!
