My 6 yo poodle was coughing up foamy sputum. He had recently been groomed and a benign growth was discovered and removed from his flank. Two weeks later he started coughing up the foam. Even though he had been vaccinated I thought maybe he had kennel cough because of his recent stay at the ER vet. But i took him to the ER to make sure he didn’t have bloat. By the time we got there he was worse. He had a high heart rate and fast respirations. His abdomen was a little distended. He had X-rays that didn’t show the typical radiogenic signs for bloat. The vet was not able to pass an ng tube which should have been done easily. She stuck a needle into his abdomen to buy time. She called the surgeon who came in. She did surgery. He did have bloat. However, his stomach torsion 360 degrees vs 180 degrees. When the surgeon released the torsion his entire stomach was red. She was not sure if his stomach would be viable. If that happened he would have to be euthanized. He also had cardiac arrhythmias. His heart and breathing rate were very high. She wasn’t sure he would survive. Even with surgery up to 30% of dogs die from bloat. My pup survived. He is now home recovering. Thanks to the expertise of the vets.
I have two other poodles 7 yo and a 10 month old. I plan to get them both a gastroplexy for prevention. I never thought this would happen to my puppy. But it did. We all should think about the preventive surgery. Bloat is dangerous and can occur and kill suddenly in hours.
