Devil’s Tor - by David Lindsay (Voyage to Arcturus)

Devil’s Tor - by David Lindsay (Voyage to Arcturus)

The final novel of David Lindsay from 1932, his most readable and entertaining work next to his masterpiece Voyage to Arcturus.

Devils Tor is a supernatural thriller set in the english country side featuring deep explorations of the Goddess myth in ancient prechristian culture.

Highly recommended.

Th Present Age - in a shockingly prescient manner seems to describe our current moment in western culture.

Does it ring true?

How is this writing viewed in light of all that happens in upcoming revolutions and upheaval during the turn of the century (Russian revolution, American Civil War etc ) ??

When I asked “What are some of the best publications by the notable Ashtree press?” this was one of the more obscure answers .

Perhaps the strangest aspect of this book was it was originally published to appeal to the tourists of Buxton - like something you would find in park gift shop.

(It was later championed by Karl Wagner and thus repressed by Ashtree in this edition)

It is certainly noteworthy and of a quality that echoes Reggie Oliver, Ramsey Campbell, DP Watt or Richard Gavin etc.

Where “Rumfuddle” originally appeared - for me the stand out and an outlier in the Vance catalog which is a really strange and surreal tour de force - and like the cover implies has more of a domestic espionage feeling rather than sci fi .

One of the best reissues that I’ve found over the last 10 years - not only is it remarkable to showcase a female voice of weird fiction from 1920 - but this has many similarities to Lovecraft and the feeling of Shadow over Innsmouth etc that has been almost unreferenced until now .
