No it's not a stick exercise. I bought a couple of used RotoToms that came with hideously dented heads. Owner must've played them at a high angle or was just a maniac. These were almost throw-away heads. But I cleaned them up and held a heat gun to them while under tension. And voila, smooth flat heads again. I'm sorry I didn't get a 'before' picture. My point being, is if you ever encounter a house kit that is heavily pitted, fire up the heat gun and put some life back into those heads. I'll bet they tune better as well.
