189 years ago on this day, Tulunad and Kodagu became the first places in India to gain independence from the British. The Amara Sulia Rebellion lead by Kedambi Ramiah Gowda is first successful Independence struggle of our country but hardly anyone talks about it these days.

On 5th April 1837, the Amara Sulia Rebellion took place. The Rebellion lead by Kedambi Ramiah Gowda and Co successfully destroyed the Britsh run Mangalore Govt office and chased away the Britishers from the city. They took over the administration of Tulunad and Kodagu and successfully did it for 13 days before the British army came in mass numbers and executed most of the Amara Sullia Rebellion Army in Bikarnakatte, Mangalore.
