Keeping this week’s edition a little more minimal than usual due to a loss in the family, but still wanted to get the key matchday info out there. Appreciate you all. ❤️

The Matchup

Rhode Island FC returns home looking to bounce back after last week’s 3-1 loss to Birmingham snapped a four-match unbeaten run in league play.

Standing in the way: the Eastern Conference-leading Tampa Bay Rowdies, currently the last unbeaten team left in the USL Championship at 5W-0L-2T.

That said, RIFC has quietly become a nightmare matchup for Tampa Bay. Rhode Island is 3W-1L-0T all-time against the Rowdies and has won the last three meetings, including a dominant 5-0 win at Centreville Bank Stadium last October, still the largest shutout win in club history.

A Few Quick Notes

  • Tampa Bay has allowed a league-low 4 goals through 7 matches
  • RIFC has scored 8 unanswered goals across the last two meetings against the Rowdies
  • Leo Afonso scored his second goal in as many league games last weekend
  • Tampa Bay completely rebuilt its roster from last season, with every goal this year coming from first-year Rowdies players

Star Wars Night in Pawtucket: RIFC Hosts Birmingham Legion FC

A cold, rainy night in Hartford. A scoreless draw that honestly had no business going to penalties. And then Koke Vegas, being Koke Vegas, making the save that mattered most before Karifa Yao stepped up and buried it. That's kind of the Rhode Island FC story right now: a club that keeps finding a way. The Tide came away from Trinity Health Stadium with an extra point in the Prinx Tires USL Cup, adding yet another chapter to an increasingly compelling 2026 run of form. The vibe feels different. This team is clicking.

Now the Tide gets to come home. And not just for any home game. Saturday night at Centreville Bank Stadium is Star Wars Night, the first in club history, and Rhode Island FC will be looking to do what it hasn't done since October 2024: win three league games in a row. Everything is trending in the right direction. The attack is cooking, the backline has gone quiet in all the best ways, and the fanbase is locked in. Time to kick it into hyperspeed and put on a show.

Where We Stand

Six matches in, the Tide sit 9th in the East, right on the playoff bubble, with eight points from a 2W-2D-2L start. That record still has the asterisk of a rough opening month, going 0-2-2 through the first four games, but what's happened since is what matters. Back-to-back league wins, a dramatic shootout victory in Hartford, and seven goals across the last two Championship matches. Call it what you want, the points are piling up. The momentum pendulum has swung hard, and it's swinging RIFC's way.

The attack has fully come alive. JJ Williams leads the club with four goals across all competitions and is picking up steam. Jojea Kwizera has already matched his career-high goal total for the club just six games into the regular season. And the defense has matched them step for step. Grant Stoneman barely puts a foot wrong. Karifa Yao beyond being a clearance machine is also now ice cold from the spot. And Koke Vegas is playing some of the best soccer of his career in goal, sitting just 11 minutes shy of 10,000 career regular-season minutes in the Championship. Rhode Island FC isn't searching for itself anymore. It's found it.

Who We're Facing

Birmingham Legion FC come in 11th in the East with six points from a 1W-3D-2L record. Still, it’s the USL, you can’t sleep on anyone. The Legion have quietly put together a four-game unbeaten run across all competitions and are trending upward. They picked up their first win of the season in genuinely impressive fashion, shutting out defending USL Championship title-holders Pittsburgh Riverhounds at home on April 12. They followed that up with a 2-2 draw against Indy, then held San Antonio scoreless before falling on penalties in their USL Cup opener. They're gaining confidence.

The main threat is Tyler Pasher, who has been an absolute nuisance lately. Pasher already has three goals in his last three games, surpassing his entire 2025 scoring total in just six matches. He also leads the team with 12 chances created, so if he has a good night, Birmingham can be dangerous. That said, the Legion come to Pawtucket carrying some unwanted history. They are winless in all five previous meetings with RIFC (0W-4L-1T). Saturday gives them the chance to rewrite that, but they'll have to do it against a club playing its best soccer of the season.

  • Tide Chart - Andrew Quadros' April breakdown is out and it is a good one. Who is rising, who is falling, and why Jojea Kwizera going from 1 goal in all of 2025 to already surpassing that total in six games this season is the story of the month.
  • Under the Surface - Tyler Hatch's April breakdown is also live and it is packed. Did you know Grant Stoneman increased his defensive actions per 90 by 230% after moving into a rotation role? Neither did we.

Vibe Check

First ever Star Wars Night, lightsabers for the first 2,000 through the gate, a team that has completely flipped the script on its early season struggles to looking genuinely dangerous. This is exactly the kind of home match you circle. Birmingham has never beaten us in Rhode Island, and this is the hottest we have looked all season. Han shot first and so will the Tide. The Force is strong with this club right now, and Centreville Bank Stadium on a Saturday night under the lights should be electric. Drop your predictions below, tell us who starts, whether JJ picks up where he left off, and if this team can pull off three straight league wins. Let's ride the Tide and remind everyone why coming to Pawtucket is a bad idea.

Cup Run Starts in Connecticut

Well, that was fun. After weeks of "it feels close" and "the pieces are starting to come together," Rhode Island FC finally gave us the full release. A 4-0 win over Charleston, four second-half goals, JJ Williams picking up a brace and hitting 50 career regular-season goals, Jojea Kwizera and Dwayne Atkinson scoring again, and Koke casually picking up the first assist of his professional career. Just a Wicked Good Weeknight in Pawtucket.

Now the Tide roll into Hartford for the opening match of this year's rebranded USL Cup, now officially the Prinx Tires USL Cup after last year's Jägermeister Cup run. New name, same chaos. And fittingly, it starts with Hartford. Our regional rival, the defending USL Cup champs, and a team RIFC already knocked off once this month, which we're absolutely going to keep bringing up.

Where We Stand

Six matches into the USL Championship season, the Tide sit 9th in the East with eight points from a 2W-2D-2L start. That record doesn't quite capture how bumpy the opening stretch felt, but the momentum is real now. Back-to-back league wins. Seven goals in the last two Championship matches. Three clean sheets in the last five across all competitions. That is not nothing.

And more importantly, the attack finally looks alive. JJ is back on the scoresheet. Jojea is cooking. Pity is pulling strings. Atkinson keeps finding goals almost immediately after stepping on the field. The defense has quietly settled in too, even when teams are getting chances. This feels less like a team searching for itself and more like one that is starting to remember exactly who it is.

Who We're Facing

Hartford come in 4th in the East with 10 points from a 2W-4D-1L record. They started the year hot, unbeaten through their first five matches across all competitions, but that unbeaten run ended on April 1 (4.01) when RIFC beat them 2-0 in Pawtucket in the U.S. Open Cup.

Since then, things have gone cold. Hartford are winless and, more notably, scoreless in their last three, including a 4-0 home loss to El Paso and back-to-back 0-0 draws against Miami and Loudoun. Four straight games without a goal is… not ideal, especially for a team that had people talking early.

That said, they are still the defending USL Cup champions, and this competition clearly means something to them. Last year, they slipped past Rhode Island on penalties in the group stage, grabbed the wild card spot, and rode it all the way to the club's first trophy. Credit where it's due.

But right now, they're searching a bit. And they get their closest rival, a team that already handled them once this month, walking into their building to kick off the defense of that title. Not exactly the reset you'd draw up. So yeah, expect some bite?

Rhody Randoms

  • This is Rhode Island FC's first match in the 2026 Prinx Tires USL Cup.
  • Last year, RIFC topped its USL Cup group and reached the semifinals before falling to Sacramento on penalties.
  • Hartford are the defending USL Cup champions after beating Sacramento 1-0 in last year's final.
  • RIFC beat Hartford 2-0 on April 1 in the U.S. Open Cup at Centreville Bank Stadium.
  • Hartford have not scored since March 28 in a 2-2 draw to the Indy Eleven.
  • The all-time series now leans RIFC, with Rhode Island holding a 2W-3D-1L record against Hartford.
  • Koke Vegas picked up the first assist of his professional career against Charleston. Goalkeepers getting assists will never not be funny.

Vibe Check

Road tripping for a derby cup match, taking on the defending champs, on national TV. Yeah, this one has some juice.

The league table still matters most, obviously, but these cup games have a funny way of becoming memorable. Last year's run gave us DRAMA, penalties, weird lineups, wild swings, and a semifinal. This year starts in Hartford, against a team that would absolutely love to remind everyone they are still the cup holders.

So what are we thinking? Heavy rotation or keep riding the hot hand? Does JJ start again? Does Atkinson finally get rewarded? Can the Tide get their first win in Connecticut?

Drop your predictions below. Let's ride the Tide of momentum, make it annoying in Hartford, and start this cup run the right way.
