How much can you shape with EQ? Still new to this but curious
For instance, I play an arch top. It’s chill and warm. But I’ve heard the characteristic strat tone comes from peaks in like the 3k range. Whether or not that‘s the actual frequency response, my question is—is it possible to EQ your way into that tone? like, could I use the ten band or the parametric eq and boost and cut tones the way a strat‘s single coil does and get a similar result? Or is that just a property of the pickup and the sound wouldn’t be similar if you tried to manufacture it because it would be distorted?
I’m trying to get the hang of how tone actually works. this is maybe separate, but not sure how much of EQ should be controlled by an eq pedal in the chain, how much comes from amp settings, amp choice, guitar/pickup choice etc.
I found a great post on here about a huge over overview on how to shape tone with the helix so sorry if some of this feels redundant.
