IKEA HÖSTULOTA HOSTULOTA LED USB lamp, first impressions

IKEA HÖSTULOTA HOSTULOTA LED USB lamp, first impressions

I know this has been posted a few times here but the info out there is piecemeal. My first impressions with HÖSTULOTA and A5X2:

  • I fly a lot and plane overhead lights are impossible to use. Also planes are often dark and A5X2 has no built-in light.
  • Most reading lights have a large clip. Better for strength of connection but makes the A5X2 pivot and rock like a mobile phone with a camera bump. Not for those who write ^(TM)
  • HÖSTULOTA is lightweight but uses A5X2 battery. A worthy tradeoff. Heavy battery and clip does not work well.
  • The A5X2 socket is to the left so you need to adjust the neck to centre the light
  • It's using the USB socket structurally which isn't my favourite. There is a 3D printable bracket out there (IKEA Gooseneck light attachment : r/Supernote) which I haven't tried but will look into. At least the light is light. You just need to worry about manhandling and knocks and bumps.
  • To reduce the bending on the socket I recommend a twist in the neck like in my photo. This reduces the lever and therefore the moment/torsion but into the socket. It also centres the light. Also best to just avoid adjusting while connected. Set it and forget it.
  • As with all external lights there is an unavoidable glare on the glossy screen surface. Lower is better so your eye angle and light angle don't align.
  • No solution or hack or third-party peripheral is as good as an integrated light. Please Supernote let's just get a light layer into the stack to avoid all this nonsense. This is the best solution I have found but at the risk of potentially breaking the USB socket, persistent glare, and yet another thing to carry. Worst of all is the trial and error to figure out a working solution which Supernote has outsourced to us users. None of them are good yet we waste our time on what Supernote brand as "DIY".
  • Red, love it
  • Dim and brightness control by clicking the lens, many levels. No awkward buttons.
  • Light is warm. I'd prefer warmer but it's good enough. No blue or green tint, thankfully.
  • Also RED! To match my pen.

EDIT: battery draw update, approx. 1%/10min or 6%/hr at full brightness, no writing. Min brightness looks to be half that, so 1%/20min or 3%/hr. Min is plenty for a dark room.

Sync device with broken screen

Is there a way to sync any supernote device with a broken screen? I don't sync often but I for sure don't want to lose everything that's on my device if there's ever a breakage. Is there a way to force connect to recent network and sync even with a broken screen? Maybe through USB?
