themoscowtimes Vladimir Ovchinnikov, the anti-war artist known for his street art in Borovsk, a provincial town 115 kilometers from Moscow, has passed away at age 88 after a long battle with illness.
Ovchinnikov became well-known across Russia and beyond in 2022 when he painted a girl dressed in the colors of the Ukrainian flag surrounded by bombs with the word "Stop!" For that piece, the artist was charged with "discrediting" Russia's military
From then on, Ovchinnikov began painting doves around the city, saying, "Since bombs aren't allowed, let there at least be symbols of peace."
Born in 1938 in Tashkent, modern-day Uzbekistan, he began painting the walls of Borovsk in the mid-1990s.
In 2022, he told The Moscow Times: "I consider [the war] a violation of all international norms - how can you attack a neighbor for no reason?"
"How many more young people must be killed to remember that a bad peace is better than a good war? People in Russia used to say 'peace to the world' and 'no to war' but now such statements are punishable by law," he said. "Where are we heading?"
